‘Worldwide’ marches set for D.C., Baltimore

D.C. and Baltimore are slated to be among at least 30 cities in the United States, Europe and Asia in which a “Worldwide LGBT Civil Rights March” is scheduled to take place on April 21.

The marches were initiated and are being organized by a Facebook group called “Let’s Reach 1 Million People Campaign…It’s a Start! LGBT Equality.”

Richmond, Va., gay activist Curtis Sledge, who was named lead organizer of the D.C. march, told the Blade this week that participants are scheduled to assemble for a kick-off rally at 10:45 a.m. at Upper Senate Park, located at Constitution and Delaware avenues across the street from the U.S. Capitol.

Sledge said he recently obtained permits arranging for the march to begin about 1 p.m. from Upper Senate Park, where it will travel west on Constitution Avenue, N.W., to 15th Street, N.W. The march will turn right on 15th Street and head toward Pennsylvania Avenue, Sledge said. He said it will turn right on Pennsylvania Avenue and continue along Pennsylvania Avenue to third Street, N.W., near the Capitol, where it will end.

A website set up by organizers says the Baltimore march is scheduled to begin at 11:45 a.m. on April 21 at War Memorial Park and travel to its destination at the Inner Harbor via Fayette, North Gay, Pratt, and Conway streets. The website doesn’t say whether a rally is planned for the Baltimore march.

High school student and Dundalk, Md., resident Brian Rohrbaugh is listed as the lead organizer of the Baltimore march.

With the exception of the national LGBT direct action group get Equal, which has said it would provide an as-yet-undisclosed role of support for the marches, no other mainline national or D.C.-area LGBT organization has said it is taking part in the marches.

“Our core mission is to achieve full LGBT equality mainly through proper and peaceful channels employing many different vehicles among the way,” Worldwide March organizers say in a statement posted to their website.

“Strong emphasis is placed on enlightening and educating society in order to achieve the ample understanding and acceptance that is necessary to garner the support we need to win at the polls and in Washington,” the statement says.

Further details of the marches and a list of cities in the U.S. and abroad where organizers say marches will take place can be found at letsreachonemillionpeople.com/locations_36.html.

Predictortron week 1 update « Craven Cottage Newsround

Predictortron ii first week test scores:

Man Utd v Liverpool: predicted 1-0 or 2-1 – actual 2-1Blackburn v QPR: 1-2 – actual 3-2Bolton v Wigan: 1-0 or 2-1 – actual 1-2Everton v Chelsea: 1-1 – actual 2-0Fulham v Stoke: 1-1 or 2-1 – actual 2-1Sunderland v Arsenal: 1-1 (1-2 next) – actual 1-2Swansea v Norwich: 2-1 or 0-0 – actual 2-3Spurs v Newcastle: 1-1 – actual 5-0

What do we think then?  The idea is that we’re in the right ballpark. all I can do now is add more games to the database which should further refine the results.

Presently I don’t think we did badly.  Man Utd v Liverpool was right, the boldness in predicting an away win for QPR is encouraging in some ways even if it didn’t get it right, and Everton v Chelsea finishing 1-1 certainly feels about right.

Fulham v Stoke was there or thereabouts, Sunderland v Arsenal we had 1-1 but 1-2 next down the list, Swansea v Norwich must go down as a surprise result so I’m happy with the prediction. and we missed Spurs v Newcastle by a mile.

All in all I think, had we put money down on the games, we’d have come out ahead, just about. you can never predict football completely but this feels like a good start. I think we could have made money on a ‘correct score’ series of bets here (or perhaps not), each result tending to be between 6-1 and 10-1.

President Obama said, “The package we've put together” will “start bending the cost curve on health care” and “cut the deficit by a trillion dollars.” Even a sympathetic Congressional Budget Office has finally put the nail in the coffin of that howler.

At the time Obama made the claim, we all knew it was specious, and study after study came out showing just how fraudulent it was. There was the double counting on Medicare, the “Doc Fix” scam and a host of others. When Rep. Paul Ryan asked the CBO to rescore Obamacare with more accurate assumptions, it didn't quite make the grade — by hundreds of billions of dollars, which, of course, are but rounding errors for the federal spending virtuoso in the White House.

Many of us knew at the time that Obama's drive for socialized medicine had nothing to do with reducing spending — the last thing that is ever on his mind. we knew that it wasn't about increasing access to care — because socialized medicine schemes always ultimately reduce people's access to quality care.

Looked at in a light most favorable to Obama's intentions, it was but another utopian scheme to put everyone on a level playing field. Looked at honestly and realistically, it was a Trojan horse to expand government control over our private lives that would result in less, worse and more expensive care.

No one who has watched Obama and the titanic leftist juggernaut he has unleashed on our beloved America thought he was promoting Obamacare to bend the health care curve down. If that had been the case, he wouldn't have had to go to such lengths to make it appear as though this budget buster was actually a plan for cost containment.

Indeed, we knew he would go to any lengths to pass this bill, even if it ended up costing two or three times more than he falsely projected. and what do you know? just a few years later, as this legislative Frankenstein awaits the verdict of the Supreme Court, the CBO released a report this week admitting it will cost about twice as much as Obama twisted its arm into calculating a few years ago.

The legislation will not cost $940 billion as originally advertised. it will cost $1.76 trillion, and that is a conservative estimate.

In a word, folks, this is outrageous. If cost were Obama's concern, wouldn't he come before the American people now, admit his error and urge Congress to repeal this ill-conceived monster? How about for the sake of truth in advertising he at least change the name of the law from the “Affordable Care Act” to the “We Can't Afford This Act”?

Betsy McCaughey, a health care expert and a vigorous opponent of Obamacare from the beginning, said that the original cost projections of the plan were “a shell game” and that the CBO's revised report “inches closer to the truth.”

This perennially defiant and Alinskyite administration didn't back up at all with these new figures. Jeanne Lambrew, deputy director of the White House Office of Health Reform, said on the White House blog, “The bottom line is clear: the Affordable Care Act will reduce our deficit, control health costs, and make health care more affordable.” Lambrew quoted a pair of consulting firms that said Obamacare would not result in employers dropping their insurance coverage, which is not only untrue but brings us to another major blow Obamacare suffered this week.

The recently released Health Care Reform Survey 2011-2012 of the Willis Group reports, “Survey respondents indicate that into the second year of Health Care Reform implementation, less than 30 percent of employers were able to maintain grandfathered status of their health care plans.”

Did you hear that? It's not quite what the White House propaganda blog is telling us. according to Willis, the “rapid loss of grandfathered status far outpaces The Department of Health & Human Services' expectations.” The department projected that 78 percent of employers would retain their grandfathered status by the end of 2011, that 62 percent would by the end of 2012 and that 49 percent would by the end of 2013.

Opponents warned this would happen, and disingenuous supporters of the bill ridiculed their warnings as partisan fear-mongering. but the facts are sometimes a disturbing inconvenience. Willis says that the accelerated loss of grandfathered status “suggests that employers have had to make many plan changes to offset cost increases,” and employers have likely chosen to forfeit their grandfathered status to control costs.

These are purely scandalous developments, and as one of my friends remarked, in saner times this would spell Obama's political end. Indeed, it would guarantee a Democratic primary challenge.

It would have been bad enough had Obama told us he was hellbent on establishing socialized medicine, even if it would cost the country more and result in people's losing their choice of plans. but he didn't, and he ought to be held to account — politically — for his duplicity.

George Clooney has been arrested outside the Sudanese Embassy in Washington, D.C., Friday morning. Clooney was leading a protest in front of the embassy when – after three verbal warnings – he and several other activists were handcuffed and led away by police.

Clooney's publicist Stan Rosenfield told TMZ, "They were protesting the violence committed by the government of Sudan on its own innocent men, women and children. They were demanding they allow humanitarian aid into the country before it becomes the largest humanitarian crisis in the world."

CNN reports that Clooney met with President Barack Obama on Thursday to discuss his concerns about Sudan.

Additionally, the Ocean's 11 star testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee this week about violence in the Nuba Mountains in South Kordofan, a state in Sudan near its border with newly independent South Sudan. (Click here to read more about Clooney's appearance before the Senate Committee.)

So far there are reports that at least a dozen people have been arrested including congressmen, Sudanese citizens and George's dad, Nick Clooney.

A few hours after his arrest, Clooney was released from police custody.  He spoke with reporters and reiterated what he was trying to achieve.

"what we're trying to achieve today is we're trying to bring attention to an ongoing emergency," Clooney told reporters.  "Our job is to bring attention to it, and one of those ways was, apparently, get arrested."

Clooney joked that this was his first time behind bars.

"it was my first arrest, thanks for asking. And let's hope it's my last."

TAYLOR: Health care for current, past elected officials to be cut in proposed deficit plan

TAYLOR — Health care was one of the talking points of Wednesday’s City Council study session on the deficit elimination plan.In the latest deficit elimination plan projection, cutting health care for past elected officials has been factored in, which would save an estimated $178,000.Also proposed is cutting health care for current part-time elected officials.Council Chairwoman Cheryl Burke said it is a necessary evil.

“Health care for current and (past) part-time elected officials is something the city can’t afford anymore,” she said. “a lot have other careers; most are getting Medicare. In some cases, past elected officials are deceased and their beneficiary is collecting health care and a pension.”Burke said $178,000 could be spent elsewhere, like on the fire Department, which has seen two of its three stations closed because of layoffs.Burke said current elected part-time officials have an option to receive $4,000 a year if they choose to not take insurance. The 12-page deficit plan spreadsheet was not as detailed as Councilman Rick Sollars was hoping, he said.“No real plan was presented,” he said. “we did not accomplish much of anything. we have to know how those health care cuts translate.“we got a spreadsheet with five-year projections, but no executive summary.” Continued…

Quizzle: ‘Cracking the Nut’ of Online Personal Finance in a Down Economy

Posted by admin | Posted in finances | Posted on 17-03-2012-05-2008

Sarah Schmid3/16/12Comments (1)Follow @XconomyDET

In its first year of operation, Detroit-based startup Quizzle, one of the many under the sprawling QuickenLoans umbrella, handed out free credit reports as a way to entice users. more than a million people signed up for the site. During Quizzle’s second year of operation, it began offering users products to help clean up their credit and prepare them for home ownership. now, in year three, CEO Todd Albery has given himself (and his company) a new challenge: how do you take an online personal finance company and make it appeal to the masses? how do you make it great?

Albery says in the world of online personal finance, even the well-known products like Mint and Turbo Tax (both owned by Intuit now) are only pulling in a small percentage of the American population as users. What Quizzle wants to do is create a paradigm shift in the way people interact with their credit scores—Albery cited what Google did to streamline search in a crowded marketplace as his chief inspiration.

“What’s the switch you flip that makes people say, I need a Quizzle account so I can do X?” Albery wonders. “We want to change the behavior of Internet users. Nobody’s been able to crack that nut for personal finance.”

Albery says he and his staff of nine employees are going to spend roughly the next 90 days devoting their energy to making Quizzle better and more useful than the competition. They’re hoping to “demystify” credit scores to the point that those who have suffered the slings and arrows of a down economy aren’t afraid to find out how bad their score has gotten—and won’t hesitate to start repairing the situation because Quizzle has taken the shame out of the endeavor.

Quizzle still offers free credit reports along with budget planning and credit improvement tools, as well as home loan recommendations. the true genius of Quizzle’s business model may lie in the fact that the company is targeting those who are turned down by Quicken for mortgages to then help them fix their credit and turn them into future Quicken clients.

Albery says it’s possible Quizzle will attack the icky feelings people often have about debt and credit scores by creating online support groups—the Weight Watchers model, if you will—where users can encourage one another to not only get their finances in order, but to keep them in order. (Instead of a support group about overeating, for instance, there might be one for people who spend their paychecks at the mall despite a growing pile of bills that needs their attention.)

Albery envisions the new Quizzle to be a sort of “consumerism anonymous” in a world where your credit score is increasingly used, almost like a criminal record, to determine your level of trustworthiness. Albery says you can pretty much assume prospective employers will run your credit. In Michigan, your credit score even affects how much you pay for car insurance. That more people are losing a handle on their credit scores due to unemployment, foreclosures, bankruptcies, and medical bills makes the matter all the more urgent, Albery says. the company’s new motto—”Don’t Guess. Know.”—says it all.

“We’re asking people to want to engage in something that has been a point of pain in their life,” Albery says. “So we try to make finances fun. we try to do the math for you. Your data is out there being used for you and against you, and you need to know what that data is.”

Albery claims that Quizzle has grown to what it is now through word-of-mouth and with a “zero-dollar marketing budget.” the site was given an early shout-out by Atlanta-based radio host Clark Howard, who specializes in topics related to consumer protection. “Clark Howard put us on the map,” Albery adds. “He interviewed a guy on the street who mentioned Quizzle. we had 20,000 people hitting our servers at the same time–that shut down the site temporarily, but it made us a brand new company.”
