I started the Art of slow Travel as a reaction to the rise of ‘fast food’ travelling so prevalent around the world. I wanted to show how a normal individual, and not just a millionaire, can travel to places for longer than the now-common whirlwind country tours. I also wanted to show that you don’t have to backpack and be on a super-tight budget to do this. In fact, backpackers don’t always travel slowly.

But now I want to hear how you do it. do you have a slow Travel story? whether it’s two weeks in one city, or three months exploring a country, or even one or several years living and working abroad, it would be great if you could share your story with the readers of the Art of slow Travel.

Here’s is how you can do it:

- take a look at What is slow Travel? to see if your story fits the theme of this blog.

- Send me your idea and/or article using the contact form. because of google, it has to be something new and not simply copy pasted from your website. the articles should be well-written, of course. I do place a lot of importance on pretty pictures, so while you’re free to submit photos, I might choose to replace them with flickr creative commons ones instead if they’re not of the necessary quality.

Update:

At present, I am looking for 7 slow travel guest posts which fit the above description, and which will be paid 30 US dollars/post. As places are limited, preference will be given to inspirational, well-written posts about places which I haven’t yet travelled to or which haven’t already been written about by guest posters (check out this page and below to see which countries have already been covered). I’ll also give preference to posts which come with beautiful photos. Previously published material will not be accepted.

Articles should be around 1000 words long, and have a section describing your slow travel experience as well as one explaining how other travellers can do the same.

UPDATE: Yoke founder Rob Fishman wrote us to say another 2,000 people joined since last night, and we have updated the headline accordingly.

The hardest part about starting a dating site is getting a crowd of interesting people to join up that can be matched against one another. some sites resort to buying up sleazy pre-made profiles, but the New York startup Yoke has another approach. It uses Facebook as the base of your profile, and matches you with single friends and friends of friends who share interests. In it’s first week, says founder Rob Fishman, the site has added 5,000 users.

Yoke doesn’t ask users to create a profile, it pulls data on gender, sexual orientation and what kind of books and movies you like straight from your Facebook account. It also hooks in to the Netflix API and looks at listening history from sites like Spotify and Rdio, then compares them to a taste graph made available through the Echos Nest API. Yoke also has their own API that matches users based on what college they went to (Harvard you say, I’m a Yale man myself).

What are the advantages to this approach? It’s super-lightweight. Users don’t spend any time creating a profile of themselves and answering innumerable questions about what they are and aren’t looking for in a new partner. the downside? the service is connecting you with people who never signed up for Yoke and may or may not be looking for a date at all. we know plenty of folks who list themselves as single on Facebook who are most definitely already attached.

“we only have a few thousand people signed up, but that means tens of millions of possible connections,” says Fishman, who previously worked as a social media editor at the Huffington Post. his co-founder, Jeff Revesz, sold his company Adaptive Semantics to HuffPo in 2009 and helped create HuffPo’s commenting system. Yoke is backed by a $500,000 seed round led by Lerer Ventures along with SoftBank Capital. “I’m on there using the service, along with the rest of the team.” they say a good startup always eats its own dogfood, and Fishman promised to update VentureBeat if he finds a new girlfriend via Yoke.

Travel expenses for Gov. Rick Perry’s security detail totaled more than $1.7 million from September through part of February, according to the latest report from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

(UPDATE: Corrects total to show amount in the new report is in addition to previously reported total for September through part of November.)

The new report, released Friday, spans the time period from the month after he started his presidential bid to the month after it ended.

Most of the expenses were for trips outside Texas.

Earlier reports obtained by the San Antonio Express-News and Houston Chronicle under the Public Information Act showed more than $364,000 in out-of-state travel expenses for Perry’s security detail from his November 2010 re-election through August.

DPS previously reported $798,031.42 in expenses from September through part of November. on Friday, it reported another $930,907.89 for September through part of February.

Perry announced for president in August but also traveled out of state before then for such things as meeting with business leaders or potential supporters of his presidential plans; promoting his anti-Washington book, “Fed up!”; and carrying out duties related to his former position as chairman of the Republican Governors Association.

The $930,907.89 total released Friday includes travel costs such as airfare, rental care, food, fuel, lodging and baggage.

It excludes overtime.

According to figures separately provided by the agency, overtime totaled $2.1 million from August through February for DPS “executive protection”, which includes Perry’s detail.

Perry’s direct travel generally is paid by his campaign, but the expenses for his security detail are paid mainly through the state highway fund, which is fueled by the state gasoline tax and vehicle registration fees.

Democrats have called for the GOP governor to reimburse taxpayers for his security detail’s expenses related to his presidential campaign.

Perry and his staff repeatedly have said it’s appropriate for the state to pay the travel costs of security officers who accompany him. they say DPS sets the security parameters.

UPDATE: Perry spokeswoman Catherine Frazier said, “Gov. Perry is governor of Texas no matter where he travels and it is unfortunate we live in a world where security is a top concern, but that is the reality. Providing security detail for the governor’s family is a customary policy that dates back numerous administrations.”

Its official three winners will share a $656 million windfall from the largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history. The winners  bought their lucky tickets at a 7-Eleven store in Maryland, a Motomart convenience story in Illinois and somewhere in northeast Kansas, lottery officials said on Saturday.

Each of the winners will gets $105.1 million in cash after taxes roughly. The winning numbers announced at the drawing in Atlanta were 2-4-23-38-46 and Mega Ball 23. Winners could receive either a one-time payment of their share or take it in 26 annual installment payments. Read full story  here…

If you won the lottery, how would you spend the money?

Many free Internet mail services would have you believe that their web-based or specialized phone-app interfaces are the only way to retrieve your e-mail. This however is usually not the case and I’d like to specify what server interfaces you may use with your built-in mobile phone e-mail client or other mail client without paying additional fees or installing additional software.

Hotmail generally uses the HTTP protocol for connecting you to your mailbox. If you want to send and receive Hotmail emails using an email client, then your software must support Hotmail HTTP access for your email account. Some email clients, such as Outlook Express or Microsoft Outlook, offer built-in support for Hotmail accounts, so you only have to select HTTP when you are asked to select your email account type and select Hotmail as the HTTPMail Service Provider.Mail Server Settings for Hotmail using the Microsoft Outlook Connector

If you are using Microsoft Outlook & the Outlook Connector, you can define your Hotmail account just like any regular POP3 email account:
