HAIKU MONDAY: On Bad Peeps. Clogged Colons and Late Steelhead

Posted by admin | Posted in peeps | Posted on 09-04-2012-05-2008

Welcome back to Haiku Monday, where that lack of flushing sounds you hear across America this morning can be  deemed Peep’s Revenge. They’re downed, but not yet out.

For a while.

Country’s clogged colons/The price for Peeps on Easter./What did you expect?

For you few Haiku Monday virgins out there, this is when and where Fish Hack goes all Japanese poet while waxing on and off about the outdoors and whatever contemporary B.S. comes flying onto the keyboard at the Fish Wrap.

For you Peep-eaters, it’s something to read on your iPad while on the throne today.

And too bad, because you should be out slaying the winter steelhead on the upper Rogue River, which is Fish Hack’s home waters.

The water’s dropping and clearing, putting steelhead on their horse and moving them upstream. Fish them near the bank and the inside turns of gravel bars, the steelhead passing lane for migrants.

Or hit the Grants Pass area because the spring chinook are starting to show.

Decisions, decisions.

Start for springers now?/Or whack the year’s last steelhead?/Fish Hack’s dilemma.

Think I’ll go steelhead, because there’s plenty of time to get pissed off at spring chinook, the non-biters that they are.

FishHack will have fresh steelhead in the smoker before some of you complete your Peep extraction.

Japan’s infidelities: Cheaters traced through electronic travel cards

Posted by admin | Posted in travel | Posted on 09-04-2012-05-2008

Since arriving in Japan I’ve been repeatedly urged to get a Suica or a Pasmo — an  electronic travel card that allows you to hop through stations quickly with prepaid credit. these passes are designed for convenience and a heavy commuter lifestyle. Not having one puts you at a disadvantage in many ways.

It does mean that you are able to pull off extra marital affairs, though.

A recent news report revealed that many who are stepping out on their other half are being discovered by tracing their Pasmos.

Until recently the card logged three months of travel and purchase information for customers to check.

However Pasmo had to shut down this service. they discovered that investigators were using the information on these cards to expose affairs.

The cards were easy to trace. All the information needed was the customer’s name, birth date and phone number — details that could be readily available to a spouse, or even posted on Facebook or Twitter.

The only detail that might be a little harder to find would be the card number.

However, anyone with enough reason to suspect their partner is cheating would probably be able to justify snooping around to find the number.

Unfortunately Pasmo can not stop people spying on their other halves. it is still possible for them to take the card to any station and print out its travel history at a ticket machine. If a customer wants to check their travel history or prove the card has been stolen, it is necessary to have this function in some form.

At this point it is not clear if this same problem exists with other brands of travel cards.

A similar issue occurred in the U.K., with the Oyster travel card, as early as 2006. only 3 years after it was released there were already concerns about its use as a tracking tool. Police were using it to track down criminals, and spouses were using it to track down cheaters.

At the moment it is still possible to check travel history with the Oyster card. However, this is the first time it has been an issue in Japan. The Pasmo was originally released in 2007, and it has taken 5 years for concerns to be raised about tracing.

However, the invasion of privacy might not end there. What is to stop companies demanding a print out of travel history to prove, for example, that an employee who called in sick actually traveled to the doctor?

With the current debate over employers requesting Facebook logins, it is surprising that similar issues have not occurred with travel cards like these. Japan is a very trusting nation, so it’s possible that most employees simply do not lie. this might be why this issue took so long to build.

As for those who want to continue their affair undiscovered, the solution seems to be relatively simple. Not to advocate infidelity, but it seems that downgrading your tech might be the way forward. instead of flashing your Pasmo or Suica, just buy a ticket!

Then, it is as simple as throwing it away, and the evidence is gone.

Music and gambling have gone hand in hand since the days when the Rat Pack ruled Vegas.

Today some major Northern California casinos feature top working musicians and comedians. Compared to shows at nongaming venues, ticket prices are fair – sometimes even a bit below market value to lure people into the casino.

Here are some of the highlights at Northern California casinos in the coming months:

Cache Creek: This casino in Brooks (Yolo County) features a diverse lineup in its Club 88, ranging from the Philadelphia soul of the O’Jays (April 21. $65-$89) to the party band Smash Mouth (April 28. $35-$55).

On May 13, Chang Di and Choo Mimi headline two Mother’s Day shows ($58-$108). on May 19, Natalie Cole performs her classics ($69-$89).

Among the other upcoming musical highlights at Cache Creek: Filipino Megastars on May 26-27, Kenny Loggins on June 16, Supertramp’s Roger Hodgson on Aug. 11 and George Benson on Aug. 25. For more info, go to www.cachecreek.com.

Thunder Valley: Located in Lincoln (Placer County), this casino has two venues: its indoor Pano Hall showcases well-known acts in an intimate setting, while the amphitheater is where summer headliners play.

Here’s a roundup of who’s coming to Thunder Valley: comedian Louie Anderson (8:30 p.m. Saturday. $32.50-$42.50), Berlin featuring Terri Nunn (April 13. $22.50-$32.50) and funk-soul jazz sax man Maceo Parker (May 12. $27.50-$37.50).

Other highlights include a Rat Pack Tribute on May 13, Sacramento rockers Tesla on May 18, Creedence Clearwater Revisited on June 2, Trace Adkins on June 29 and Steve Miller Band on July 13. For more, go to www.thundervalleyresort.com.

Black Oak Casino: This Tuolumne County casino doesn’t book top headliners but still has fine music – and its shows are free. Coming up: Beatles tribute band Sun Kings at 9 p.m. Friday, the Latin dance ensemble Aztlan at 9 p.m. Saturday and comedian mark Pitta on April 19. For more information, go to www.blackoakcasino.com.

Jackson Rancheria: This Amador County casino lures some top acts to its Grand Oak Ballroom: little Anthony and the Imperials performs April 26 and Robert Cray plays May 4. both shows $40. Information at www.jacksoncasino.com.

River Rock Casino: Located in Geyserville, this casino features free shows with appealing acts such as the Anna Kristina Band at 10 p.m. Friday and the California Cowboys at 10 p.m. Saturday. More at www.riverrockcasino.com.

And of course there’s often great music and comedy at the big casinos in Reno, South Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas.

Yolo County DA’s Office pays its respects to crime victims

The 6th Annual Crime Victim’s Tribute, sponsored by Yolo County District Attorney Jeff Reisig, will take place on Monday, April 23, and is part of the District Attorney’s Office observance of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week.

Every year, millions of innocent people become victims of crime. they deserve our understanding, compassion, and respect. April 22, marks the beginning of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week in honor of victims and the advocates of victims’ rights.

For three decades, National Crime Victims’ Rights Week has successfully promoted awareness of victims’ rights and services and honored countless crime victims and survivors. this year’s theme — Extending the Vision: Reaching Every Victim — calls on us to expand the vision that inspired the movement and celebrate the progress achieved to date.

The vision that launched the victims’ rights movement emerged more than 30 years ago. then — as now — crime victims endured physical and emotional wounds, costly financial burdens, an often hostile criminal justice system, and an alarming public tendency to blame them for the crimes against them.

Victims were often excluded from courtrooms, disrespected by officials, and afforded few rights. since the 1980s, the nation has made dramatic progress in securing rights, protections, and services for victims of crime.

The Office for Victims of Crime, U.S. Department of Justice, supports a range of programs for crime victims, and seeks to extend those services to those who are underserved.

Please join the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office and Victim Services Division from 12 noon to 1 p.m., Monday, April 23, at the Crime Victims’ Tribute at the Woodland Opera House at 340 Second St., Woodland. for more information on National Crime Victims’ Week, visit www.ncvc.org.

DIY Pennant Invites for Birthdays, Baby Showers, and More

Invitations set the theme for any event whether it is a dinner party, baby shower, or wedding. I recently have been working on planning a baby shower for a good friend and she saw pennant invitations that she loved. they suit her style perfectly, and I really wanted to give her what she wanted and run with it to set the tone for the big celebration welcoming her baby girl. Pennant invitations are not hard to come by when you search sites like Etsy as they’ve been trending for a while now, but they also can run about $2.50 per invite and considering we needed about 60 invites, that wasn’t the route I wanted to take. Besides that, I really love creating invitations and so it was only natural that I would make them myself. While they took me a while because of the quantities I was producing, the process is really quite simple and for a smaller group of a dozen or so they’d be really easy to whip up in no time.

1. create your base invite with the text on it including all the pertinent information for the event using either a word processing program or by hand writing them on pre-cut card stock. I created mine using Inkscape (a program similar to Adobe Illustrator) and then sent the image to my local printer who printed them two per page and set to 5 inches by 7 inches. if you have a high quality printer at home, you should be able to easily print them yourself. be sure to leave about two inches blank between the top of the text and the top of the paper.

2. Take a 1/8″ hole punch and make a hole 1/4″ of the way down from the top of the invite and about 1/8″ from the edge of the invite. Use the hole punch to make a second hole 1/8″ away from the first hole on the side closer to the center of the invitation. Repeat on the opposite edge of the invite.

3. Take twine and thread it through the hole closest to the edge moving from the front of the invite to the back of the invite and then back to the front and across the invite to the second set of hole punches where you’ll repeat the process of threading the twine through the hole to the back and finally through to the front a final time. Leave about 2 inches of twine hanging on each side of the invite.

4. Tie the twine off by taking the loose ends and threading it up and under the center section of twine and then back through the hole until it’s tight. Doing it this way will ensure that your twine ends are facing downwards instead of flying upwards and looking unruly.

5. next, select your decorative paper designs and cut your paper lengthwise into 1 inch strips.

6. Starting in the corner of your paper, cut the paper at a 45 degree angle to the opposite side of the paper.

7. Fold the triangle point that you’ve created up to the top side of the paper and fold to create a folded triangle.

8. cut the paper along the line of the new folded triangle. Repeat this step as many times as need to get the desired number of pennants in the desired number of patterns. I used three different paper patterns to get three approximately 1 inch pennants across my 5 inch wide invitation.

9. Place a glue dot on one side of the inside of the pennant and hang the pennant on the line of twine. Press the front and back of the pennant together to secure them. they will slide a little bit from side to side, but that just adds to the charm of them.

Send them off in the mail, and you’ll be sure to have a very happy group of guests excited to come to your event!
