Muni Fund Outflows Blamed on Tax Day

Muni funds just saw their first net outflow in 18 weeks, but fear not: it’s only people paying their taxes.

That’s the argument being made by muni market pundits on Friday. to back up a bit, late Thursday Lipper reported that muni fund mutual funds and ETFs saw a $57 million net outflow in the week ended Wednesday, the first weekly net outflow in the past 19 weeks. such fund flows tend to be lagging indicators of market sentiment, but can also drive markets when withdrawals (or inflows) snowball, as they did in early 2011, when markets saw 29 straight weeks of weekly outflows totaling nearly $50 billion.

This time market participants aren’t too worried. they note that last week’s outflows were primarily from short-term funds, and when investors pull money from short-term muni funds in April, it’s usually to raise cash to pay income tax liabilities.

“”[W]e are not very concerned about this weak trend of fund flows because it appears to be principally related to seasonal tax time issues,” writes Chris Mauro of RBC Capital Markets on Friday.

Mauro notes that long bond funds actually saw net inflows of $187 million in the week, while intermediate funds posted about $17 million in inflows and the high yield component of the long bond sector reported $120 million in inflows. “Therefore, this week’s small $57 million net outflow figure was actually driven by a much larger $260 million outflow in the short muni space,” Mauro writes. “This indicates, to us, that this week’s fund redemptions were due to investor withdrawals to pay income tax liabilities.”

Mauro adds that since 2000, there have only been three instances in which municipal bond fund flows for the first two weeks of April were significantly positive (in excess of $250 million). in eight of those years, the two-week flows were either negative or minimally positive. Here’s Mauro again:

in the absence of a major credit event or a massive asset allocation shift to equities or taxable fixed income, we expect municipal fund flows to move into positive territory again once tax time is behind us, especially with municipal bond coupon payments and principal redemptions scheduled to build through the late spring and summer months.

Not convinced by Mauro? Perhaps the nearly identical assessment made by Citi strategists George Friedlander, Mikhail Foux and Vikram Rai on Friday will sway you:

In our view, seasonal factors related to Tax Day may be playing a role. it makes sense that shorter-duration funds would be the first liquidated to make tax-related payments. 2011 was a good year for stocks, so there may be some tax payments being made that relate to capital gains and that require something to be liquidated to raise cash.  a similar pattern was observed in 2010.

On Friday, the iShares S&P National AMT-Free Municipal Bond Fund (MUB) was up 32 cents to $108.90.

Manned space travel, from Gagarin to SpaceX

The anniversaries this week of the first man in space and the launch of NASA’s first space shuttle missions come at time when commercial spacecraft are ushering in a new era of space flight.

Thursday was the 51st anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s 108-minute orbit around the Earth, an event that shocked the world and ratcheted up the speed of the cold War-fed space race.

And 31 years ago on April 12, the space shuttle Columbia lifted off, the inaugural flight of NASA’s shuttle program which drew to a close last year.

Astronauts from different countries on the International Space Station commemorated the events by taking time out from their experiments to reflect on the anniversaries over a meal, according to an article on Space.com.

Even with the NASA shuttle program drawing to a close, manned space travel to shuttle astronauts to the ISS and back remains one of the agency’s top priorities.

Meanwhile, commercial space travel is advancing quickly. Space startup SpaceX is currently preparing to launch its rocket and dock its spacecraft with the ISS. If the 21-day mission is successful, it could lead to regular trips into space and a milestone in commercial space travel and exploration.

Ultimately, the company wants to send people to Mars, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said on “The Daily Show” this week. meanwhile, different spacecraft designs, such as the one pursued by Stratolaunch, aim to make traveling into space as repeatable as air travel today.

For a quick journey through the past, present, and future of manned spacecraft, take a look at this slideshow, which has links to many more images of space travel.

Indie Musician Dave Days Talks About Life As A YouTube Star

Posted by admin | Posted in Miley Is Awesome | Posted on 16-04-2012-05-2008

Dave Days has over 1.5 million YouTube subscribers, where he’s had a home since 2007. He made his start parodying other YouTubers of the day, but then quickly branched out into music. He’s most famous for his song parodies of artists such as Beyonce, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, and Miley Cyrus. He just wrapped up his shows on the road with the Digitour, which was a travelling series of concerts featuring indie YouTube stars.

I had a chance to talk with Dave on the phone before he began touring about becoming a YouTube star from the beginning, touring live, and his surprise hits on iTunes.

How did you get started on YouTube?

Back when I was 16 or 17 – YouTube wasn’t that popular. but I saw some people talking into camera, so I started doing that in my basement. then I started working with other YouTubers, doing music and parodies and all of that stuff blew up. so after high school, I went out to LA to focus on music. I learned a ton from other YouTubers. They were definitely a launching pad for my career.

Have you ever been signed to a label?

I’m totally independent. I grew up recording bands in high school, and now I do all my own music and video production. When they’re done, I put them online using TuneCore.com. I’m really happy doing it this way. I’m just trying to do what I can myself until there’s a point where I can’t anymore.

How did you get involved with Digitour?

I already knew Sarah and Meridith and Chris , so when they told me they wanted to try a tour of YouTube musicians , I was like, sure, that sounds cool. They put it together, gave us awesome busses, and we went out on tour.

Was last year your first time playing live?

Well, I played live in bands in middle school and high school, but touring was definitely a new experience for me. I learned a lot last year.

What do you like the most about touring?

YouTube is a whole new platform – people performing on the Internet while fans watch at home. When you tour, it’s different because it’s live, so you can’t do a bunch of takes. I love performing live because I do a lot of music. It’s way more in your face with the music. I love both. I want to start playing live more. How are you making money?

Selling merchandise and through ad revenues on YouTube. I’ve also done brand videos with Kelloggs and Sony. I also sell my music on iTunes and online.

How are you approaching the future of your career?

To get a feel for Dave’s style, let me offer my personal favorite video of his, which is a parody of Katy Perry.

Is Ryan Callahan The Perfect New York Athlete?

Posted by admin | Posted in sidney crosby | Posted on 16-04-2012-05-2008

By Jeff Freier – Columnist

Apr 15, 2012 – first off, is there anything better than the Stanley Cup playoffs? the first games of the first round are just as intense as the Super Bowl or the seventh game of the World Series or NBA Finals. the New York Rangers and Ottawa Senators barely have a history and in the blink of an eye they’ve turned into the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. and second of all, with respect to the title of this little column, I’m not saying Ryan Callahan is perfect. By definition, something is either perfect or it isn’t — there’s no almost-perfect or sort-of perfect or kind-of perfect. But regardless of that, I guess I’m saying the Rangers’ captain is kind-of perfect. Sure, Callahan could be “more perfect” if he scored 60 goals a year and piled up 80 assists (and if he would have somehow prevented Saturday night’s loss), but he’s close to perfect in the way he approaches his profession on and off the ice (and you’re probably wondering if I get paid by the word, and if I’ll ever get to the point already).

All of the qualities that Callahan possesses are everything a New York fan (or any fan really) asks for. first off, he’s homegrown, and there’s something special about a player who comes up through the system and fans get to witness the blossoming of said player first-hand. New York Knicks fans have fallen head-over-heels for Tyson Chandler, and like Callahan, the center is all one could ask for in a player. But, unfortunately, New York has to share him with Dallas. Mavericks fans have a special place in their hearts for Chandler, so we don’t get him all to ourselves. so while other cities may respect Callahan for the way he plays, he’s all ours. He’s New York through and through.

There’s no player in the NHL who’s more blue-collar than Callahan. as we all know it’s impossible to give more than 100%, but somehow Callahan seems to do that. There’s an extra “Ryan Callahan Level” that he consistently plays at. Hockey, more than any other sport, is filled with players who put in every ounce of effort they can, but the Rangers’ leader does just a little bit more, whether it’s blocking shots, doggedly forechecking, killing penalties or making a nuisance of himself in front of the opposition’s net. anyone who throws himself in front of a Zdeno Chara slap shot with little disregard for his own well-being is the definition of tough, which is how Callahan’s season ended last year, of course. But he never once hesitated in doing it all again this year, blocking 88 shots (not 88 Zdeno Chara shots, but overall), which was third in the league for forwards.

New Yorkers always admire a larger-than-life personality — a Babe Ruth, a Reggie Jackson, a Joe Namath, even a slob just like them in the form of a David Wells — but if one is going to boast, brag and make predictions, he better belt three home runs in a deciding World Series game or author a Super Bowl upset of epic proportions, or one heads right to buffoon-ville, where someone like Rex Ryan is attempting to wrest himself from. But the humble, even-keeled, quiet-without-being-intimidated personality works best in New York, and that’s what Callahan possesses. while the colorful Walt Fraziers and Keith Hernandezes are beloved, so are the Don Mattinglys and Jerry Koosmans and Jean Ratelles. Callahan fits into that mold — the consummate professional, who’s quick to credit his teammates and coaches, and never glorify himself or succumb to any look-at-me showboating. and despite what fantasy world Sidney Crosby is living in, Callahan is certainly no whiner.

Callahan is a leader by example, in the Derek Jeter mold, but even Jeter has had a few small problems, with whispers that he wasn’t always the most supportive teammate (see: Alex Rodriguez) or that he held petty grudges (again, see: Alex Rodriguez) or that he could engage in trifling feuds (yes, see: Alex Rodriguez). Callahan was the captain of the Rangers before he became the captain of the Rangers. He was born for the role. and we never hear a peep about any off-ice controversy. He’s never been arrested. He doesn’t have eight children by eight different women. He doesn’t have to be told how to act like a professional. even the impeccable Eli Manning has the snubbing of the San Diego Chargers incident in his past that some just can’t get over, and has had his leadership and quarterbacking skills questioned (though that may say more about his detractors than Manning himself).

Though Callahan hasn’t Matteau! Matteau! Matteau!’d or Reg-gie! Reg-gie! Reg-gie!’d his way into New York history yet, he’s certainly a clutch player, as we saw in Game 1 of the opening round series with the Ottawa Senators, when he set the tone for the game (and maybe the series, as the Senators countered Callahan’s and the Rangers’ physical game with a little 1970s Flyers-type goonery in Game 2) with his hard hits and just as importantly opened up the scoring for the Blueshirts. his seven hits and blocked shot were all in a day’s work for the right wing. everything was amped up in Game 2, with the intensity level risen, and the Rangers mainly lost due to a couple of unlucky bounces, but Callahan’s team has met every challenge this season and overcome every bump in the road with their (and his) usual lunch-pale approach to the game and stayed the course without panic while coming out successful on the other side.

The Ranger captain is tough, he’s relentless, he’s a leader, he produces, he’s professional, he’s homegrown, he never embarrasses — he’s the embodiment of all that is good in sports. and that may make Ryan Callahan as perfect a professional athlete as we have in New York. and out of all the Blueshirts, it would be least surprising if the first-round series ended with these three words: “Callahan! Callahan! Callahan!”

Search Comes Up Empty for Sierra LaMar on Month Anniversary

Santa Clara County Sheriff’s investigators and search crews came up empty on Friday on the one-month anniversary of the disappearance of Morgan Hill teenager Sierra Lamar.

Sgt. Jose Cardoza said the underwater search and rescue team did not find the 15-year-old Thursday while they scoured the Chesbro reservoir. And the team also didn’t find her on Friday, when they dove to eight spots within the Uvas reservoir.

Sgt. Don Ray, who is in charge of the underwater search, said investigators chose the spots based on a review of sonar images showing objects that seemed out of place.

One of the divers, Peter Robinson, told NBC Bay Area that searching in the reservoir is like diving in darkness, it’s almost impossible to see anything. All searches, he said, are based on touch.

Sierra has been missing since March 16, when she was last seen at 6 a.m. when she left to catch a school bus near her house, but never showed up for school that day. Her sad tale has made headlines and hundreds of people have scoured land and water to find her. Santa Clara County sheriff’s detectives have spent 8,900 hours and poured over more than 1,400 tips regarding her disappearance.

Also on Friday, sheriff’s deputies took to their dirt bikes again, searching various remote parts of southern Santa Clara County for the teen. And this weekend, investigators will re-canvas areas of Morgan Hill and re-interview neighbors and local residents.

Meanwhile, the San Francisco Giants’ home opener was on Friday. the team tried to harness the power of its large fan base by using Facebook to post a flier about Sierra.

As of Friday morning, the Giants FB post on the teen had 2,875 "likes."

The Giants post simply asks the team’s fans to help find Sierra and to share the post with their friends. they ask anyone who knows anything about the case to call the sheriff at 408-808-4500.

Restoration work discovers treasure in Grant’s home

A restoration project opened doors at Ulysses S. Grant’s boyhood home in Georgetown, Ohio.

In the process of restoring the home where the future 18th president of the United States livedfrom 1823 to 1839, the Ohio Historical Society removed 11 doors, most of which had beenpainted.

As he peeled back the paint, restorer Mike Beam got a pleasant surprise: a beautiful,hand-painted, faux wood-grain finish apparently added after the house was built in 1823. Historicalsociety officials speculate that the intricate oil-paint patterns were created by an itinerantartist to make the doors look like more expensive burled oak or mahogany.

Beam will clean all the doors, apply shellac, and buff them to the “fine furniture” look theyprobably had when Grant played there as a child.

Other work being done includes restoration of fireplace mantles, foundation, plaster andstructural repairs, window replacement, and period reproduction wallpaper and floor coverings. Theproject is scheduled to be completed later this year.

Jesse and Hanna Grant moved to the Georgetown home when their son, Ulysses, was 1 year old. Helived there until he left to attend West Point in 1839.

The property is on the National Register of Historic Places and was declared a National HistoricLandmark.

Information about the Grant boyhood home can be found at http://ohsweb.ohiohistory.org/places/sw09/index.shtml.

Game One: Philadelphia Flyers at Pittsburgh Penguins

I’m going to try and do these for as many playoff games as possible with updates as games go along. Feel free to drop in your comments as you watch either below or using the #BShelf hashtag on twitter or on our facebook page

It’s the “blood bath” we’ve all been looking forward to and it starts TONIGHT (who says hockey fans don’t like violence). We’ve got the obscenely talented and relatively healthy Penguins squad against the revamped, younger and nasty as always Philadelphia Flyers. The expectation is that it will be the best series of round one and if it can hit half of the hype it has garnered, we’re in for a treat.

Fast Facts

- Your starting goaltenders tonight are Ilya Bryzgalov and Marc-Andre Fleury. Not a single person reading this is shocked.

Bryzgalov’s line vs. Pittsburgh this season: 2-0-0; 2.59 GAA; .913 SV%Fleury’s line vs. Philadelphia this season: 1-3-1; 3.41 GAA; .872 SV%

A couple people reading this are probably shocked given the press these guys got this season. Not to belabor the importance of goaltending in this sport, but yeah, these guys will need to be huge.

- Danny Briere and Niklas Grossman will be in the lineup for Philadelphia tonight while Pavel Kubina will not.

Expected Lineups per morning skates:

Philadelphia

Scott Hartnell – Claude Giroux – Jaromir JagrBrayden Schenn – Daniel Briere – Wayne SimmondsZac Rinaldo – Sean Couturier – Maxime TalbotJakub Voracek – Eric Wellwood – Matt Read

Kimmo Timonen – Matt CarleBraydon Coburn – Nicklas GrossmanMarc-Andre Bourdon – Andreas Lilja

Pittsburgh

Chris Kunitz-Evgeni Malkin-James NealSteve Sullivan-Sidney Crosby-Pascal DupuisMatt Cooke-Jordan Staal-Tyler KennedyArron Asham-Joe Vitale-Craig Adams

Kris Letang – Paul MartinZbynek Michalek – Brooks OrpikBen Lovejoy – Deryk Engelland

Two other useful things:

Flyers twitter for updatesPenguins twitter for updates

After one period…-The Pens are up 3-0 and the Flyers look moderately shell shocked.-Crosby scores the first goal of the playoffs which is sort of poetic in a way.

-Tyler Kennedy made it 2-0 after a beautiful feed from Jordan Staal.

-Dupuis wraps up the period with a tally and Bryzgalov looks bad on this one.

After two periods…-It was more of the same in the second period minus the goals from Pittsburgh as they drove possession and got several more good chances-Bryzgalov looked much more settled in net and seem to be in better position-Daniel Briere’s goal counted, but it really shouldn’t have when you get this look at things.-Here’s how it ended for Danny…
