Penguins goaltender Fleury said effects from collisions did not linger

Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury took a dramatic beating in a game against the new York Islanders near the end of the regular season, but he said Tuesday it has nothing to do with his current struggles against the Philadelphia Flyers in an Eastern Conference quarterfinal.

In that 5-3 loss to the Islanders on March 27, Fleury was hit in the jaw by a puck and collided with teammates Chris Kunitz and Paul Martin.

Asked how long the effects of those collisions lasted, Fleury said, “A day. the next day, then I was good.”

Fleury, who has allowed 17 goals on 84 shots against the Flyers, said he does not feel any different.

“The same me,” he said.

He said he tried to “take it easy and relax” during Monday`s off day, but the Penguins` situation weighed on his mind. Which is as it should be, he said.

“I would like to forget about the last two goals (in Sunday`s game), but not forget what position we are in right now,” he said.

Center Jordan Staal said upon the Penguins` arrival in Philadelphia that he was unaware of speculation regarding his future with the team.

Staal, with whom the Penguins can begin contract discussions July 1, is set to become a free agent following next season along with fellow center Sidney Crosby.

Both players likely will command raises from their current average annual salary — $4 million for Staal and $8.7 million for Crosby.

The Penguins, who during the season signed winger James Neal to a six-year, $30 million contract, made that move with the intention of being able to retain each of their star centers: Crosby, Staal and Evgeni Malkin, who can become a free agent following the 2013-14 season.

Staal appeared bemused when pressed about speculation that he is unhappy with the Penguins and could be traded this summer.

“About me?” Staal asked. “What are they saying? No, not right now. That`s the last thing on my mind, for sure.”

Pulling Scott Hartnell`s hair was an accident, said Penguins forward Craig Adams, who fought the Flyer late in Game 3. But Adams also suggested Tuesday that Hartnell should visit the barber.

“I grabbed a handful of his hair for a second and let it go,” Adams said. “I don`t think he has a huge problem with it. if he does, he should maybe get a haircut.”

Adams was assessed an instigator penalty for the fight. “(Pulling hair) is not something you try to do ever,” Adams said. “I tried to reach up to grab the collar. if you`ve got enough hair, it`s going to get in the way sooner or later.”

After Martin did not practice with his teammates Tuesday at Consol Energy Center, Bylsma was uncertain about his defenseman`s availability Wednesday night.

“Paul Martin was a maintenance day,” Bylsma said, indicating it was a routine absence. “And he is possible for (tonight`s) game.”

Martin leads the Penguins with 90 shifts in the series and did not appear to be injured after Sunday`s game.

Defenseman Kris Letang said he doesn`t regret trying to “Shhh” the Philadelphia crowd Sunday. he said the gesture was intended for former teammate Max Talbot, who did the same thing in Philadelphia when he played for the Penguins in the 2009 playoffs.

“Just a funny thing,” he said.

He knows how to fold ‘em

Most children of Japanese ancestry, says Henry Kaku, will learn origami. Like other Japanese art forms, it is passed, generation to generation. “ninety percent of the models go back hundreds of years.” But although the creators are lost, their art as fresh as ever.

“you see people sitting in doctors’ offices, crocheting or knitting to pass the time or for relaxation.” Origami is Kaku’s method of relaxation and he’s been enjoying it for decades.

He continues the tradition of his ancestors: passing down what he’s learned. Kaku teaches classes in Petaluma and Santa Rosa, in schools and libraries and private classes.

On April 21, he offers an origami workshop for all ages, part of the current exhibit at the Petaluma Arts Center. From 2 to 3:30 p.m. he’ll demonstrate what it is he does for pleasure and relaxation: those intricate folds of paper than can create items as diverse as flowers in a vase, spinning tops, kissing lips, boxes, Yoda (complete with walking stick), cows and the universally known crane, Japanese symbol of good fortune.

The legend of the thousand cranes, Kaku explained, is that if one folds that many of the long-legged birds, “your wish will come true.”

He knows that origami, which reaches so many, was used as a way to pass the time in the internment camps, again, passed down from generation to generation.

“What’s neat about origami,” he says, is that, in the past at least, the people who designed it did it in the hope it would be taught to others.” Although this isn’t now always the case, with some persons copyrighting or patenting their creations, it’s the way he believes origami should still be, and part of the reason he so enjoys doing just that-passing it on, paying it forward, so that his delight in the art will be magnified by the students who carry on his enjoyment.

Worldwide Smart Grid Spending to Reach $46.4 Billion in 2015

Posted by admin | Posted in Worldwide | Posted on 21-04-2012-05-2008

According to a new report released by IDC Energy Insights, global smart grid spending is likely to increase 17.4 percent from 2010 to 2015 with overall spending reaching over $46 billion worldwide in 2015.

The IDC Energy Insights report was released Monday, entitled ‘Worldwide Utility Smart Grid Spending Forecast, 2010-2015‘.

The report identified 14 smart grid project types in an effort to determine investment priorities across four separate regions; North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. The report breaks out the resulting data based on technology type:

  • hardware, software and services
  • utility ownership
  • government owned or investor owned
  • and whether the utilities are electric only or a combination electric and gas.

Utilities worldwide share the same pressures and business drivers to make information and communications technology investments in smart grid infrastructure. However, there are differences in regional investment profiles – in some cases massive differences – as a result of differences in government mandates, environmental regulations, and private sector support. Utility investments in smart grid initiatives are intended to improve grid reliability, support distributed and renewable energy, reduce operations and maintenance costs, increase energy delivery efficiency, improve system security, and enable energy efficiency and demand response. with these drivers in mind, the IDC Energy Insights report strove to understand the magnitude and timing of ICT investment.

They found that in North America there was widely deployed advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and smart meter investment. Additionally, by 2014, North America distribution automation investments will concentrate on feeder automation, volt/var optimization, and automated fault restoration.

In Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, smart meters and AMI investments are carrying their respective region’s growth forward as other major project deployments begin later in the forecast period than North America. Europe has its eyes set on its 20-20-20 goals (20% increase in energy efficiency, 20 percent reduction of CO2 emissions, and 20% renewable generation sources by 2020) while the Asia-Pacific region is waiting to see China deploy 300 million smart meters by 2020.

African Travel, Inc. Supports Earth Day Awareness for Endangered Gorillas and Chimpanzees

GLENDALE, Calif., Apr 19, 2012 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) –On April 22, more than one billion people around the world will participate in the 42nd annual Earth Day to help raise awareness of global environmental concerns. For Earth Day and every day, African Travel, inc. works to bring more awareness to the plight of Gorillas and Chimpanzees in the wild; as part of their efforts they offer special packages to see these incredible creatures in their natural habitats while simultaneously working to protect them.

Mountain gorillas are among the most famous of all endangered animals. These majestic animals are lately finding it very hard to survive, and as recently as 2006, they were at the brink of extinction. Fortunately, recent conservation efforts have been quite successful, the primary factor responsible for this positive trend being an effort by organizations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda to protect the gorillas and their habitat. Another significant contributor towards protection of the Mountain Gorillas is tourism! when travelers visit Africa using a knowledgeable company such as African Travel, they are making a huge contribution to the conservation of Mountain Gorillas. despite these positive efforts, Mountain Gorillas are still under threat of extinction, and more conservation efforts will be necessary to remove gorillas from the endangered animals list. now is an excellent time to visit these magnificent animals in their natural habitat.

Chimpanzee tracking is even more limited in its opportunities than gorilla tracking, and viewing locations are further to reach. thus it is a great privilege to observe these engaging creatures in their forest home. Chimps are extremely vocal and quite active, which means treks may continue for quite a while as the chimps continue to move as they feed. Mahale Mountains National Park is home to one of Africa’s most studied chimpanzee populations. Mahale has sightings virtually every day and the chimps, accustomed to being watched, continue their daily activities in the company of their human observers.

according to Jim Holden, President of African Travel, inc., “By joining an African Travel safari to view Mountain Gorillas and Chimpanzees, Americans traveling to Africa are directly contributing to the conservation of these magnificent animals, as the income derived from Park and Game Lodge fees goes towards maintaining their habitat and educating the local people as to the inherent value to their livelihoods.”

Two African Travel, inc . safaris where you can see these beautiful animals in the wild:

Jonathan Frid: Star of ‘Dark Shadows’

Posted by admin | Posted in jonathan frid | Posted on 21-04-2012-05-2008

Jonathan Frid, who died yesterday of natural causes at the age of 87, was a Canadian actor best known for playing Barnabas Collins in the 1960s original vampire soap opera Dark Shadows.

His death comes weeks before a Tim Burton-directed version of Dark Shadows is due to be released, starring Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins. Frid has a cameo role in which he meets Depp’s character in a party scene with two other original actors from the show.

Frid starred in the 1960s gothic-flavoured soap opera about supernatural goings-on at a family estate in Maine. Jim Pierson, a friend and spokesman for Dan Curtis Productions, the creator of Dark Shadows, said Burton and Depp were fans of Frid, who played a vulnerable vampire in one of the first sympathetic portrayal of the immortal creatures. "twenty million people saw the show at its peak in 1969," Pierson said. "Kids ran home from school and housewives watched it. It had a huge pop culture impact,"

Pierson said Frid, whose character was added in 1967, saved the show and stayed on until the end of its run in 1971. he said Frid was never into the fame and fortune and just wanted to be a working actor. he said he loved the drama and finding the flaws and the humanity in his characters.

Frid had been an accomplished stage actor before Dark Shadows. The youngest of three sons, he served in the Royal Canadian Navy during the second World War, later gaining a degree in directing at the Yale School of Drama and studying at Rada in London.

He went on to star in various theatre productions with illustrious actors including Katharine Hepburn, but it was his turn in Dark Shadows and its first feature-film adaptation, House of Dark Shadows, that made him a commercial success and kept him busy throughout his career with reunions, fan events and dramatic readings. Stuart Manning, editor of the online Dark Shadows News Page, said Frid had brought a new dimension to the role of the vampire by injecting the role with depth and a sense of regret for his immortal existence.

"That idea has been taken many times since," said Manning, who worked with Frid as a writer on the 2010 Dark Shadows audio drama spin-off, The Night Whispers. "Twilight uses it, and shows like True Blood and Buffy – which again I think shows the influence Dark Shadows has had."

Frid’s other credits include the 1973 TV film The Devil’s Daughter, co-starring Shelley Winters, and Oliver Stone’s directorial debut, Seizure.
