Super Moon Lights Up the Sky over Santa Barbara County

A crystal-clear sky Saturday night gave Santa Barbara County residents a full view of the biggest and brightest full moon of 2012.

Saturday’s moon was a “super moon”, which scientists say is as much as 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than usual.

The phenomenon is a result of the elliptical orbit the moon follows around the Earth. on Saturday night, the moon passed within 221,802 miles of Earth, reaching its closest point at 8:34 p.m. One minute later, it lined up with the Earth and the sun to become full.

The appearance was just a phase, however, and within two weeks the moon will be at its farthest point from Earth, around 252,000 miles away. the average distance between the Earth and its moon is about 230,000 miles.

The last super moon, also known as a perigee moon, occurred on March 19, 2011. a super moon can have an effect on tidal patterns, and unusually high and low tides are expected this weekend and into the new week.

The super moon wasn’t the only reason to skywatch Saturday night. the annual Eta Aquarid meteor shower was expected to hit its peak Saturday night and continue through Monday night. as many as 60 meteors an hour may be visible from the shower, which is created by dust from Halley’s comet on its own 76-year orbit around the sun.

Why does boxed milk have cooked taste?

Posted by admin | Posted in cartons | Posted on 06-05-2012-05-2008

Answer: what your family is noticing is the "cooked" flavor of milk that has been heated to 280 degrees. Regular pasteurized milk is heated to only 160 degrees. that extra heat is why the milk in shelf-stable cartons lasts so long.

Climateer Investing: “How to Spot the Future”

Posted by admin | Posted in investing | Posted on 06-05-2012-05-2008

From Wired:Thirty years ago, when John Naisbitt was writing Megatrends, his prescient vision of America’s future, he used a simple yet powerful tool to spot new ideas that were bubbling in the zeitgeist: the newspaper. he didn’t just read it, though. he took out a ruler and measured it. the more column inches a particular topic earned over time, the more likely it represented an emerging trend. “the collective news hole,” Naisbitt wrote, “becomes a mechanical representation of society sorting out its priorities”—and he used that mechanism to predict the information society, globalism, decentralization, and the rise of networks. As clever as Naisbitt’s method was, it would never work today. There’s an infinite amount of ink and pixels spilled on most any topic. these days, spotting the future requires a different set of tools. That’s why at Wired, where we constantly endeavor to pinpoint the inventions and trends that will define the future, we have developed our own set of rules. they allow us to size up ideas and separate the truly world-changing from the merely interesting. after 20 years of watching how technology creates a bold and better tomorrow, we have seen some common themes emerge, patterns that have fostered the most profound innovations of our age.this may sound like a paradox. Surely technology always promises something radically new, wholly unexpected, and unlike anything anybody has seen before. but in fact even when a product or service breaks new ground, it’s usually following a familiar trajectory. after all, the factors governing thermodynamics, economics, and human interaction don’t change that much. and they provide an intellectual platform that has allowed technology to succeed on a massive scale, to organize, to accelerate, to connect.so how do we spot the future—and how might you? the seven rules that follow are not a bad place to start. they are the principles that underlie many of our contemporary innovations. Odds are that any story in our pages, any idea we deem potentially transformative, any trend we think has legs, draws on one or more of these core principles. they have played a major part in creating the world we see today. and they’ll be the forces behind the world we’ll be living in tomorrow.1. look for cross-pollinators.It’s no secret that the best ideas—the ones with the most impact and longevity—are transferable; an innovation in one industry can be exported to transform another. but even more resonant are those ideas that are cross-disciplinary not just in their application but in their origin.this notion goes way back. When the mathematician John von Neumann applied mathematics to human strategy, he created game theory—and when he crossed physics and engineering, he helped hatch both the Manhattan Project and computer science. his contemporary Buckminster Fuller drew freely from engineering, economics, and biology to tackle problems in transportation, architecture, and urban design.sometimes the cross-pollination is potent enough to create entirely new disciplines. this is what happened when Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky started to fuse psychology and economics in the 1970s. they were trying to understand why people didn’t behave rationally, despite the assumption by economists that they would do so. it was a question that economists had failed to answer for decades, but by cross-breeding economics with their own training as psychologists, Kahneman and Tversky were able to shed light on what motivates people. the field they created—behavioral economics—is still growing today, informing everything from US economic policy to the produce displays at Whole Foods.more recently, the commonalities between biology and digital technology—code is code, after all—have inspired a new generation to reach across specialties and create a range of new cross-bred disciplines: bioinformatics, computational genomics, synthetic biology, systems biology. all these fields view biology as a technology that can be manipulated and industrialized. As Rob Carlson, founder of Biodesic and a pioneer in this arena, puts it, “the technology we use to manipulate biological systems is now experiencing the same rapid improvement that has produced today’s computers, cars, and airplanes.” these similarities and common toolsets can accelerate the pace of innovation.the same goes for old industries, as well. the vitality we see in today’s car industry resulted from the recognition that auto manufacturing isn’t a singular industry siloed in Detroit. in the past decade, car companies have gone from occasionally dispatching ambassadors to Silicon Valley to opening lab space there—and eagerly incorporating ideas from information technology and robotics into their products. When Ford CEO Alan Mulally talks about cars as the “all-time mobile application,” he’s not speaking figuratively—he’s trying to reframe the identity of his company and the industry. That’s testimony to a wave of cross-pollination that will blur the line between personal electronics and automobiles.the point here is that by drawing on threads from several areas, interdisciplinary pioneers can weave together a stronger, more robust notion that exceeds the bounds of any one field. (One caveat: Real cross-pollination is literal, not metaphorical. be wary of flimflam futurists who spin analogies and draw equivalences without actually identifying common structures and complementary systems).2. Surf the exponentials. Some trends are so constant, they verge on cliché. just mentioning Moore’s law can cause eyes to roll, but that overfamiliarity doesn’t make Gordon Moore’s 1965 insight—that chips will steadily, exponentially get smaller, cheaper, faster—any less remarkable. Not only has it been the engine of the information age, it has also given us good reason to believe in our capacity to invent our future, not just submit to it. after all, Moore’s law doesn’t know which silicon innovation will take us to the next level. it just says that if the previous 50 years are any indication, something will come along. and so far, it always has….MUCH MOREHT: History Squared

Re-Examining Your Finances to Increase Your Savings

Posted by admin | Posted in finances | Posted on 06-05-2012-05-2008

0

Unfortunately, we are all feeling the effects of the current economy on our finances, and we have all had to review our expenses and determine if they are really necessary. while some have turned to couponing, others have started to simply carpool. but I think we can all dig a little deeper in examining our finances.

Food

Of course, you absolutely need to start couponing – I  will scream it to the world. ask around and join coupon forums such as AFullCup.com and TheFrugalGirls.com. another way to save money is to buy your meats directly from a butcher shop or from a farmers market. most butcher shops prices can be well below the retail value if you order larger portions. if you can find someone else or another family to join in with you to split the cost, then even better. Farmers markets  produce can obtain you a savings  25 percent of more. if you live in an area where farming produce is available locally, stop by your local farm to shop for your produce. Here in Virginia,  my children and I making an outing of it and pick strawberries from the local farms. We pay considerably less than we would at the grocery stores.  Additionally,  it’s fresher and way more fun than shopping. Bakery stores are also all in all the best place to buy baked goods. Bakery stores or “bread store”‘ offer baked goods at a discount of  50 percent or more. Bakery stores offer bread in all varieties, snacks, and drinks.

Clothes

Having two little girls has certainly been a blessing in allowing me to save on clothing costs. My youngest daughter is able to wear her big sister’s clothes the following year. but each year we  make a point to give my youngest daughter’s clothes to someone we know and love. Utilizing the practice of  “Hand-me-downs” was a way of life years ago, and I plan to keep the tradition going. for any clothing items  that I just can’t seem to give away, I donate. if you do not have anyone to give old clothes/accessories to, feel free to sell them or even consign them. Selling old clothes seems to be a quick money-maker. Take advantage of consignment shops, as well as donation centers to buy and sell clothes. I recently brought my daughter eight pairs of jeans for under $20. She grows so fast that I can barely keep up with her shoe size. I just ask her if the shoes she is trying to put on fit, if not, off to the store we go.

Work Expenses

Remember that some work expenses can be tax write-offs. keep a bright folder with all your receipts for work expenses, such as clothing and tools. We  all would like  to start a new job with nice clothes. have you considered purchasing your items by starting a “layaway?” a layaway is simply items you purchase in installments and take home after they are paid in full. Stores such as Catos, Marshalls, Burlington Coat Factory, and Sears all  have the option of purchasing by layaway. each store has its own rules regarding the length of the installment plan and amounts to be paid. however, keep in mind that a layaway requires a deposit. for good measure, always try to pay more than the deposit to keep your payments down. The trick with using layaway is to not over purchase, because you are able to buy more because of the installments. but simply pick out outfits that you can mix and match for functionality.

Gas expenses

Carpooling with a nearby coworker is an absolute must. however, be cautious in carpooling with people who do not live nearby as this will make your commute longer and also cost you more in gas prices. before getting gas, check website that provide gas price forecasts, as well as the cheapest gas prices. GasBuddy.com allows you to enter your zip code and shows the cheapest gas prices in your area. The site also provides  gas price averages for the past week, month and year. this allows you to pick the best gas station and to determine if you should fill up now or wait until gas prices drop further. if gas prices state they are falling and have been for a few days, I would only purchase about $20 worth of gas. I get so upset when I fill up my tank and a few days later the gas prices drop drastically. Goodness, that is such a tear-jerker.

Constantly examining your finances and finding innovative ways to save will allow you to continue to increase your savings. Think of it this way, the more money you save the sooner you can retire, or the sooner you can vacation, or travel the world or endless possibilities. The sooner you can enjoy, the better life can be for you and everyone around you.

Deal of the week:  Purell hand sanitizer .33 cent coupon $1/3, so it was absolutely free – in fact, the store owed me 1 cent. Yay!   Author Description Courtney Martin

I am a coupon queen and frugality expert. over the past 7 years I have had to learn how to save money, use coupons, and budget. All of these things ultimately have allowed me to still have some sort of entertainment weekly and not break the bank. I wrote the “Frugal Secrets to Saving Money” article in the very first Miss Millennia issue, and really wanted to be able to add more. I would like to be able to tackle one subject at a time in depth, as opposed to a little information about a huge topic. I also was the accounting clerk for my mother-in-law tax business. I primarily entered info into the excel spreadsheet, sorted the receipts, and submitted the totals to be processed for taxes. I also took Accounting I in high school. Believe it or not, I actually enjoyed accounting class, it wasn’t hard at all.
