Community exercise events, such as the HBF run for a Reason, are a great opportunity for people to enjoy the positive benefits of exercise.
More people take part in this event every year. So with its popularity booming, a key question for exercise psychologists is: why do so many of us find it difficult to exercise?
A critical factor is motivation. for the lay person, part of the answer to why some people can roll out of bed at 5am on a cold and dark morning for a walk or run, while others pull the doona over their head and go back to sleep, simply comes down to decision making.
Some people, like the 5am exerciser, don’t wait for the ideal set of circumstances. They just do it. but if you’re the type to hit the snooze button, all is not lost. It is about understanding your mindset and making the most of it – working out strategies to get you going.
Reluctant exercisers can be motivated to exercise because they value the activity (so find a sport you love), they feel it’s important to take part and not let people down (this is why group sports or exercising with others helps) or because of health concerns.
When it comes to starting – and sticking – with exercise, use whatever helps you change your mindset from wanting to do it, to doing it. A 5am run may not be the thing for you but a mixed netball game with friends at 6pm may fit the bill.
Goal-setting is important. Martin Hagger, a Curtin University professor and leading researcher in the exercise psychology field, says that “implementation” goals are the most effective.
Rather than a goal like “I will lose weight and start exercising”, make an implementation goal like “I will exercise after work on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5.30pm to 6.30pm at my local park”.
Implementation goals provide the steps to realising the good intentions.
One of the great enjoyments for athletes in team sports is training and competing with mates. the same is true of participants in events such as the HBF run for a Reason.

Miss Sunday's eclipse? Energized by the celestial show and yearning for more?
You'll have to wait awhile. The continental United States won't see another good show for five years. And Los Angeles won't see as stunning as a show for another 59 years.
But here is a sampling of what's next in store for the solar eclipse front in the United States.
2014: A partial solar eclipse is in store for the western United States on Oct. 23, 2014. Western Canada, Alaska and the northern edge of the U.S. border between Washington state to Wisconsin should have the best view, with more than 60% of the sun's diameter (its center line) blocked by the moon's shadow. California and the U.S. Southwest should see more than 40% of the sun's diameter covered.

2017: This is the one to travel for. a "total" solar eclipse — an even better one than Sunday's "ring" eclipse — will completely cover the sun's light, blotting out even the sun's outer fringes. Total eclipses are far more exciting because they will shroud the land in an eerie midday twilight. The Aug. 21, 2017, total eclipse will glide through Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, northeastern Kansas, Missouri, southern Illinois, western Kentucky, Tennessee, the great Smoky Mountains National Park and South Carolina.
Los Angeles will see more than 60% of the sun's diameter covered up by the moon.
2023: This is Los Angeles' next major partial solar eclipse, according to calculations by NASA eclipse expert Fred Espenak. it will happen on Oct. 14, 2023, and will cover up 78% of the sun's diameter.
2071: In Los Angeles, Sept. 23, 2071 will bring a solar eclipse that exceeds Sunday's show, with 91% of the sun's diameter covered up.
2121: Alas, this won't happen in our lifetimes, but on July 14, 2121, Los Angeles will see a full "ring-of-fire" eclipse of its own.

Country singer Jewel says she very much enjoyed spending Mother’s Day with her ‘two favourite men.’
the songstress and her professional bull rider husband Ty Murray welcomed their son Kase Townes into the world last summer. Mums were honoured in the US for Mother’s Day last Sunday and Jewel relised every moment of her first experience as a matriarch on this holiday. ‘It was magical,’ she told People magazine. ‘I spent the day relaxing with my two favourite men, Ty nad Kase. we hung out at the family ranch in Texas and enjoyed being outside with our animals and nature.’ Jewel and Ty married in the Bahamas 4 years ago and Kase is their first child together.
The pregnancy had not been without drama for the star, who had struggled to conceive. Back in March 2011 she was hit by a fire truck, although fortunately hospital tests proved she and the unborn baby hadn’t been harmed.
Jewel has released ten albums since 1995 and is currently focused on being a mother and a wife.
Grace Community Church hosts the fourth annual Community Baby Shower on may 19, a benefit to support hundreds of needy families in the region.
The free-of-charge shopping event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, 1320 Auburn way S, Auburn.
Last year more than 680 moms, dads and kids lined up out the door and through the parking lot, patiently waiting for their turn to shop for clothes, diapers, toys, cribs, coats, car seats and strollers.
“We are going to serve more families than ever before,” said Shelly Suth, staff person at Grace Community Church and organizer of the event.
World Vision, an international relief organization, already has donated three pallets of diapers and a pallet of baby bedding – and has promised that more diapers are on the way.
Individuals and groups throughout the community have been donating new and gently used baby clothes, furniture, toys and books, in addition to clothing for children up through size 5T.
A local businessman donated his warehouse for storage and also will load his trucks and deliver the items the day before the event.
“The Community Baby Shower is not just about supplying clothing and furniture,” Suth said. “We also connect these moms, dads and kids to organizations that can help them thrive in today’s challenging economy.”
Booths will be set up, featuring the Auburn Food Bank, Auburn Youth Resources, Auburn Valley Y, South Sound Dream Center, Celebrate Recovery, English as a Second Language, ACAP and others.
