Fight escalates over Raleigh ballfield for special-needs children

Cary, N.C. — A dispute over a proposed baseball field in north Raleigh for special-needs children has led to an alleged assault.

The Miracle League of the Triangle, which organizes a baseball league for more than 500 special-needs children in the area, and the Kerr Family YMCA want to build some baseball fields off Queensland Road in the Wakefield development.

Residents of the nearby Carrington neighborhood opposed to the move went to Adams Elementary School in Cary, where the Miracle League now plays its games, on May 26 to hand out their fliers to parents.

“It just seemed like a bad choice, on a holiday weekend, to come out here and ask parents who already support the league to join them in their effort to stop (the expansion),” Miracle League board member Joe Dew said Monday.

The flier, entitled “What is the Miracle League not Telling you?” warns of health concerns because of power transmission lines near the site of the proposed ballfields.

“It felt like scare tactics to me,” Dew said.

Tensions rose as Cary police ordered the protesters off school property and out to the sidewalk. Witnesses said Traci Brown, executive director of the Miracle League, was relaying that message to a couple of protesters when she was hit in the back and knocked to the ground.

“It was described to me as both fists coming down on the back of her. I believe hitting her in the neck and in the shoulder,” Dew said.

Police arrested Gene C. George, 48, of 2905 Witterton place in Raleigh, last week and charged him with assault in the case.

“It’s disappointing that somebody would get physical,” Dew said. “It gives you a little pause. It makes you stop and wonder how we are not communicating with each other.”

George couldn’t be reached for comment Monday.

“I don’t think I would take it that far,” Carrington resident Chantay Henderson said of the alleged assault.

Henderson said she doesn’t want the incident to take away from real concerns neighbors have about potential traffic and noise from the ballfields.

“It’s not that many homes here,” she said. “It’s going to stir up a lot of traffic and commotion. They said there are going to be big lights.”

The Miracle League is committed to working with the Carrington neighborhood to address residents’ concerns, officials said, but they don’t view the transmission lines as a real issue, noting that the residents chose to live near them.

Cardiff Blues youngster Harry Robinson proving little man can still prosper

HARRY ROBINSON is proof that there’s still room for all shapes and sizes in modern-day rugby.

That’s the verdict of Wales caretaker coach Rob Howley, who has included the teenage Blues winger in his training squad for next month’s Tests against the Barbarians and Australia.

At 5ft 10ins and 12st 13lbs, the uncapped Robinson is no giant in the mould of Grand Slam wings George North and Alex Cuthbert.

But Shane Williams demonstrated that size isn’t everything by dazzling on the international stage for more than a decade.

And Howley sees something of the record-breaking wing wizard in the diminutive Robinson.

“It’s nice to see all shapes and sizes playing rugby,” said the former Cardiff scrum-half.

“It’s sort of Shane Williams-esque.

“When Harry is on the ball, he’s very potent.

“He can do things in terms of beating a man, which is a vital ingredient to international rugby.

“We just need young, enthusiastic, talented players playing rugby and it’s another one off the production line.

“Once again, he’s come through a sevens pathway.

“He’s followed the likes of Alex Cuthbert, Lloyd Williams and James Hook in that respect.”

Having only turned 19 last month, Robinson is still eligible for Wales U20s and lined up for them against Japan in Swansea last night at the request of the senior Welsh management.

He could in theory be involved in the Junior World Championship in South Africa next month, but it seems more likely he will head out to Australia in a trimmed-down 34-man tour party.

“He is still young, still developing, but we feel this is the best call to take him further up that development curve,” said Howley, on his inclusion in the initial 38-strong training group.

“I have spoken to Mark Taylor (Wales U20s team manager) and Joe Lydon (WRU head of rugby performance and development) about the selection process and they have agreed.”

Meanwhile, Howley has warmly welcomed the news that French-based duo Mike Phillips and James Hook will be released to take a full part in preparations for the summer Test programme.

Both players will join the rest of the training squad at the Vale Resort base next Monday, even though that falls outside the formal IRB date of release for players involved in international duty.

The French Rugby Union has formally told the WRU of the players’ release and informed their clubs.

Perpignan fly-half Hook is likely to feature against the Baa-Baas at the Millennium Stadium on June 2, while Bayonne scrum-half Phillips will be able to travel out to Australia with a 15-strong advance party on May 31 to prepare for the first of three Tests against the Wallabies.

Howley said: “This is fantastic news for us as it means Mike and James will be fully involved in the complete preparation programme we have in place.

“they are both experienced international players, but it is still a huge advantage to have them working within our environment from day one.

“We are extremely grateful to the French Rugby Union and the individual clubs involved for taking this step.

“it is a gesture which will undoubtedly benefit the players and I know they will want to thank their individual clubs for helping them fulfil their international commitments with Wales.

“it is an example of northern hemisphere rugby working in unity for the benefit of our players and the game in general.

“We are all aware of the difficulties we can encounter when Welsh-qualified players are based outside Wales, but this decision shows there are opportunities for us to realise mutual benefits.”

Clermont Auvergne full-back Lee Byrne was not selected in the training squad as he is still likely to be involved in domestic competition in France until the date the tour party departs.

Byrne, who will turn 32 on June 1, will be on stand-by for the Australian trip.

Should Online Dating Sites Prevent Users From Naming Abusers?

Earlier this week, Tracy Clark-Flory published an article on Salon about allegations of assault in the BDSM community, specifically on FetLife, a Facebook-like social network for men and women in the kink scene.

The Salon article explains that FetLife administrators have begun removing message board posts that name names, and that a group of members upset by this have started a petition to remove from the Terms of Service a clause requiring users to pledge not to “make criminal accusations against another member in a public forum.”

The mission statement of this group (“Let us name abusers”) reads thusly:

While these conditions may be invoked to stop harassment and to shield Fetlife from liability, they also prevent members of our community from publicly naming and speaking out against abusers, rapists, and other predators. given Fetlife’s prominence and the role it plays in supporting and expanding kink community – particularly its role as a point of entry into the community for young, inexperienced, or otherwise vulnerable people – we feel that Fetlife’s current policy is irresponsible and tantamount to enabling abuse. PLEASE CHANGE IT.

Protecting members from allegations of abuse is one thing—on conventional dating sites like OkCupid and Match.com, where profile pictures are more often portraits or headshots, a person’s identity can be obscured only so much.

But FetLife isn’t technically a dating site; it’s a social network. Most use nicknames and monikers that reflect their individual sexual predilections; photos are posed and sexy, and many choose not to show their face. That members who liase on FetLife end up meeting to have sex with one another more often than anonymous friends on Facebook is to be expected of an online community targeted at individuals who share a mutual interest in a very specific type of sex.

As one anonymous commenter on the message board explained, what they want is freedom of expression without special caveats:

All anyone is saying is that we should be able to say “last night, usernamegoeshere hit me nonconsensually,” exactly the same as you can do in real life or on livejournal or facebook or whatever, without having it automatically deleted. It’s not fetlife’s job to determine the veracity. the other person can explain or defend themselves exactly as they would in real life or elsewhere on the internet.

As she/he explains it, this would be a self-governed system, not so much a rule or responsibility, but the freedom to say something if you so choose. Really, it’s just freedom of speech—in this case, speech cautioning others against a potential threat. Why should protecting the reputations of certain anonymous individuals supersede the very real importance of preventing sexual violence? If the allegations are false, so be it. But how can we abide the illogic that prevents a victim from warning others in a community of someone he/she knows is dangerous?

Should online dating sites prevent users from naming abusers? is enforcing silence very different from allowing continued violence? (Uggggk I wish that didn’t rhyme.) Discuss… [Salon - Image via Peter Bernik/Shutterstock]

Miami Heat Forward Puts Home Up for Auction

showing that timing is everything, Miami Heat forward Mike Miller, who is battling with his team in the east coast conference series against the Boston Celtics to get into the NBA finals, is putting his Miami mansion up for auction.

Miller, whose team lost to the Celtics last night, which makes The Heat down by 1 game in the playoffs wants to sell his Miami coastline estate, but said he hasn’t gotten any offers worth accepting. so he’s putting the Hillsboro Shores mansion up for auction. it will sell to the highest bidder regardless of price.

The auction will be held June 30th for the six-bedroom oceanfront home in Pompano Beach. “We’ll see how this goes,” he said. “I’m in it to move on to the next step.”

The estate sold for $12 million when the area’s real estate market was flying high, but it had been listed for sale for $9 million before being slated for auction. Miller purchased the home for a cool $5.4 million in 2010.

The estate features two gourmet kitchens, a cigar and wine room, custom aquarium and a swim-up pool bar, a media room, game parlor, wet bar, marble fireplace, custom aquarium and a home audio and video system. it has three levels of living space, totaling nearly 9,000 square feet. There are 6 bedrooms, 8 full and 2 half baths.

The outdoor living area features a swim-up lap pool bar and a newly built entertainment lounge. There’s also a 100 ft. marble dock and two lifts for small watercraft, which could accommodate jet skis.

Hillsboro Shores is just north of Fort Lauderdale and south of illustrious Hillsboro Mile, one of the most coveted residential waterfront locations in South Florida, also known as “Millionaire’s Mile” for the collection of mega-mansions that dot the coastline.

The property’s unique location allows both protected ocean frontage and large yacht dockage capabilities, a rare amenity for oceanfront property in the region.

Miller is under contract to the Heat for $5.8 million next season, but hasn’t seen much playing time in the playoffs with two additional years on his contract with the team. The Heat could release the forward this summer to ease their salary-cap issues.

The disaster that is online dating…

Good Rainy Friday to you all,

Before I start this post, I should say that this one isn’t teribbly HIV related, but more of a general life diary entry… now let’s begin.

I’ve been on online ‘dating’ sites for a very long time now, probably longer than I should have really, I joined a certain one when I was 13 and caused all sorts of havoc for the owners/admins – and since then the number of websites I’ve used has grown and grown until I couldn’t keep track of them.

I’d get home of an evening and check my twitter and Facebook, then I’d head onto gaydar, dudesnude, fitlads, manhunt, gayromeo, recon, and a few others which I can’t even remember. I’ve been doing this for nearly 3 years now and where has it got me? Nowhere really. I’ve dated three guys, one of which was an ass and two of which were bat crap crazy.

So last week I took the decision to leave all these sites behind, it was both therapeutic and a little scary logging onto each site one by one and deleting my profiles – some I’ve even been paying for. Shortly after I’d done away with my last profile I began to worry about what I’d just done, had I put myself at a disadvantage for finding someone special? but then I recalled the general quality of messages of I got on these sites – usually photos of people’s crotches but no faces, or elderly gentlemen offering to be “generous” to me. That’s not really the kind of attention I’m after.

During Birmingham Pride (at the weekend) I met an awesome guy, and we hit it off pretty spectacularly. this without the use of the internet, or being asked “what you upto?”, or ”what you into?” or even the less common but still awful “ASL?”. now before you get ahead of yourself, I don’t know if anything is going to happen with this guy I met over Pride, but I’m secretly hoping it does – he’s very hot and very very lovely.

I feel for honestly and completeness I should say that I’ve retained my Grindr profile, purely because it’s a great way to chat to my mates for free, and it’s a laugh at train stations when you’re bored.

I’m not entirely sure what to use my computer for now I don’t log on to all those sites, I’m sure I’ll find a purpose though – it makes a rather handy mirror with the webcam…

Good Rainy Friday to you all, before I start this post, I should say that this one isn’t teribbly HIV related, but more of a general life diary entry… now…

Video: Tom Brady says new crop of receivers will boost the offense and defense – Extra Points – Boston.com

FOXBOROUGH — far be it for any quarterback to crow over the crop of receivers that he has in the spring. but this is no ordinary group. Tom Brady has a decorated bunch whom he has plenty of history with, from the newly signed Jabar Gaffney and Donte’ Stallworth, to veterans Deion Branch, Wes Welker, and Chad Ochocinco. With all of the receivers in place, including free agent signing Brandon Lloyd, it was an inevitable topic of discussion in Brady’s first speaking session to the media Thursday afternoon.

“We’ve brought in quite a few guys. So hopefully the mix of guys that we had last year along with the new guys can create some different options for us,” Brady said. “It’s a very competitive position. all of our days at practice have been very competitive. but it’ll help our defense out, it’ll help our offense out. The more good players you have, the better team you’re gonna be. It’s only our sixth day of OTAs. Obviously we have a lot of work to do before the season starts. It’s been a lot of fun being out there, seeing Dante’ and Jabar who I’ve played with before. and I really loved playing with those guys. and obviously Wes, Deion, and Chad. We have a very competitive position.”

Brady also opined on his appreciation for the spring practices, which he says he did not necessarily enjoy in his 20s.

“I appreciate it every day. I think that one thing that my injury taught me a few years ago was how fragile this game is,” Brady said. “To be able to take the field every week is really a blessing. Maybe at 34, I feel a little differently in that sense. I love it just as much now as I ever have. I love being out here for the OTAs. Going on 25, I was probably [expletive] about the OTAs. but when you’re 34, you’re not. You’re saying alright, let’s see what kind of team we got. I really got nothing else going on in my life. So I try to come out here and do a good job for this team.”

Former NFL Europe player Wade Davis comes out

Wade Davis, a former NFL defensive back for the Tennessee Titans, Washington Redskins and Seattle Seahawks, recently admitted he is gay.

Wade Davis never played in a regular-season NFL game and spent most of his NFL career hanging around the margins of the game — on practice squads, in NFL Europe, in three NFL training camps. but while the former Weber State star didn't make a lasting

Jeff Niemann is out 4-6 weeks with a fractured right leg, but rather than shift Wade Davis back to the rotation the Rays are turning to Alex Cobb as the fill-in. no official announcement has been made yet, but Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports

Heat at Celtics Game 6 preview -Celtics blog – Boston Globe basketball news

Posted by admin | Posted in celtics | Posted on 08-06-2012-05-2008

The Celtics are five wins away from an NBA title, but you won’t find anyone on Causeway Street who views it that way. the Celtics need one more win to earn a berth in the Finals, and those two guys above aren’t going to make it easy. LeBron James and Dwyane Wade are still the best two players in the series, and they’ve got room for improvement. If they can both elevate their games tonight in Game 6, they can potentially carry the Heat back home for a Game 7.

And that’s really the main factor, the approach the Heat come with. It’s safe to assume that the Celtics will come with everything they have at home, in a building they’ve gone 8-1 in this postseason. They’ll shoot better than they did in Miami in Game 5, and they’ll probably get off to a good start in the first quarter.

The Heat have lost five straight games in Boston and 15 of 16 here overall. It’ll take everything the Celtics have to make it 16 of 17.

Here are the details for tonight’s game:

Tip-off: 8:30 p.m.Series: Celtics lead, 3-2Broadcast info: ESPN, WEEI/850 AM/93.7 FM (Sean Grande and Cedric Maxwell)

Probable starters:

Celtics:PG: Rajon RondoSG: Ray AllenSF: Paul PiercePF: Brandon BassC: Kevin Garnett

Heat: PG: Mario ChalmersSG: Dwyane WadeSF: LeBron JamesPF: Shane BattierC: Chris Bosh

Officials: Dan Crawford, Tony Brothers, Tom Washington. (James Capers alternate)

Story lines:The clutch gene: : Saw an interesting stat today that on game-tying or go-ahead shots with less than 24 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter or overtime, the Heat are 0-10 in the last two postseasons. That’s very un-clutch. the Celtics, meanwhile, seem to be able to finish any game in which they’re able to hang around long enough. If it’s a close game late, they’ve got guys who aren’t afraid of the moment. It’s hard to quantify every aspect of that, and it’s not just about shooting. but being “clutch” is probably the biggest advantage Celtics fans think their team has heading into Game 6.

More Bosh: Chris Bosh played only 14 minutes in Game 5, and he didn’t see the floor in the fourth quarter. After the game he said he could play more, and he probably should have considering his effectiveness in the first half. Expect Bosh to start tonight and probably double his minutes.

It’s Rondo: You know Kevin Garnett is going to show up with 20 and 10 and his trademark intensity at home. What will make or break the Celtics will be the play of Rajon Rondo. He’s prone to big first quarters at home as well, and he needs to drive his team from the jump. If we get one of those Rondo games, the Celtics will be moving on.

Poland Vs. Greece, 2012 UEFA European Championships: Can Hosts Break Down Greeks?

Posted by admin | Posted in Poland vs Greece | Posted on 08-06-2012-05-2008

By Kevin McCauley – Contributor

Jun 7, 2012 – Poland put together a strong run from 2002 through 2008, qualifying for three out of four major tournaments and missing out on just Euro 2004. they failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup, and if one feels like being obnoxiously technical, they still haven’t qualified for a major final since 2008, but they return to the world stage as hosts of Euro 2012.

Hosts get the benefit going into Pot 1 for the draw, and Poland got the additional benefit of drawing arguably the weakest team in each of the three other pots. Group a is about as weak as a group can possibly be at a major final. It’s actually quite remarkable.

However, this is the European Championships, and every team that’s here except for Poland and Ukraine had to get through qualifying. That means that no one is actually bad, and Poland will have a very hard time getting out of their group and into the knockout stages of the tournament, even though they’re playing three home games in one of the easiest groups a major final has seen in a long time. their first opponent is Greece, who has managed to qualify for three consecutive major finals.

Related: Greece Team Preview | Poland Team Preview | Sotiris Ninis Profile | Robert Lewandowski Profile

Most of the team that got Greece to Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup still remains in place, led by captain Giorgos Karagounis. He’s the perfect midfielder for a Greece team that plays a conservative and hard-nosed style, but needs a bit of creativity from someone. He strikes the perfect balance between defensive aptitude and technical skill, and even though he’s 35 years old, he might be the best player between the two midfields.

Poland’s captain is “Kuba,” Jakub Blaszczykowski, but while his skill on the wing will be key for his country, the real pressure is on his club teammate. Robert Lewandowski is the best striker that Poland have had since the 1980s, and he’s coming off of an absolutely brilliant season for Borussia Dortmund. He has the talent to create goal-scoring opportunities by himself, but since Greece likes to sit back quite a bit, his teammates should have the ball enough to attempt to create some for him.

Will the Greeks show any tactical ambition?

Greece has a couple of exciting youngsters in Sotiris Ninis and Giannis Fetfatzidis, but for the most part, every negative stereotype about Greek football is true. they play a very rigid and defensive game, and they’re good enough at taking their limited chances that they get away with it. however, on Friday they’ll be going up against a Poland team that isn’t exactly loaded with talent. Yes, the Borussia Dortmund contingent is excellent and Ludovic Obraniak is no slouch, but this is not a great team.

Because of the crowd and Lewandowski, Greece will probably sit in their usual shell, but they should probably take a risk or three with their tactics. They’re a better team than Poland.

Speaking of Ludovic Obraniak and Giannis Fetfatzidis …

If you’re watching the game tomorrow and you want to impress your friends with your high-level knowledge of global football, drop these two names. Obraniak was brilliant in the second half of this season for Bordeaux after he made a move from Lille, and because Greece’s defense is going to be focusing so heavily on Lewandowski, he should find some shooting opportunities.

Going the other way, Fetfatzidis is Greece’s not-so-secret weapon off the bench. He’s a spectacular dribbler with very good pace, and he’ll cause problems for Poland’s left back — either Sebastian Boenisch or Jakub Wawrzyniak — if he comes off the bench. Expect to see him if it’s a 0-0 draw with Greece looking comfortable, or if Greece are trailing.

Projected Poland Lineup (4-2-3-1): Wojciech Szczesny; Sebastian Boenisch, Damien Perquis, Marcin Wasilewski, Lukasz Piszczek; Rafal Murawski, Eugen Polanski; Adrian Mierzejewski, Ludovic Obraniak, Jakub Blaszczykowski; Robert Lewandowski

Projected Greece Lineup (4-3-3): Kostas Chalkias; Jose Holebas, Avraam Papadopoulos, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Vasilis Torosidis; Grigoris Makos, Kostas Katsouranis, Giorgos Karagounis; Georgios Samaras, Theofanis Gekas, Sotiris Ninis

football formations

Monty the Psychic Metal Disk says: my programmer says that Poland will be “riding high on emotion,” but I do not know what emotion is, because I am a metal disk. I do, however, know about the statistical footballing production of one Robert Lewandowski. Poland 1-0 Greece.
