Gun Range Looking To Host Birthday Parties For Children

Baseball stadiums, minigolf venues, and amusement parks have long been popular locations for children’s birthday parties. Shooting ranges? not so much. however, one venue in Texas is hoping to change all that.

According to Reuters reporter Marice Richter, the Eagle Gun Range in Lewisville, Texas, scheduled to open later this summer, will allow parents to hold birthday parties for children over the age of eight.

Each youngster attending the party will receive a half-hour gun safety course before being allowed to shoot either a BB gun or a .22 long rifle, and trained staff will be on hand to help parents throughout the event, Richter added.

“A lot of people don’t know how to shoot a gun so we’re providing education and training for shooters of all ages,” David Prince, the owner of Eagle Gun Range, told ABCNews.com‘s Christina Ng on Friday. “they have birthday parties with go-karts and trampolines — with proper education before going into a gun range, why not a birthday party?”

“They’ll be in the classroom, walk into the range, shoot, go back to the classroom, and have cake and ice cream. There’s no piñata. It’s not festive like that. There are safety glasses, ear protection, and that’s the only time they test the gun,” he added. “A parent or guardian or NRA instructor will all be in arm’s range… There’s no child that will be walking around with a gun at a birthday party.”

Prince told Teresa Woodard of KXAN.com that the indoor gun range will have 24 shooting lanes, a pair of rooms available for birthday parties, and will be air conditioned. He also said that all kids need to be tall enough to look over the shooting table, and reiterated that safety officers would be on hand to assist parents.

The concept has drawn mixed reaction from parents in the region.

“it makes me very nervous,” Dawn McMullan, described by Woodard as “a mother of two and a gun control advocate,” told KXAN.com. “I think 8-year-olds, developmentally, can’t tell the difference between play and reality sometimes, and also put it in a party or game atmosphere just seems to not respect a gun as much as we should respect guns.”

Conversely, Austin resident Lori Benoit called it “a great idea,” telling Richter, “I have three boys and they are all fascinated with guns. I would love to have a place like this close to us. it would be such a great experience to introduce shooting sports to kids at a party.”

Fort Worth area realtor Jon Baker concurred, telling Reuters that he would much rather see children like his 10-year-old son “experiment with guns in a controlled environment than off somewhere in the open where someone could get hurt.”

Stony Brook handles UMaine in opener of America East Baseball Championship

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The University of Maine was no match for Stony Brook University’s vaunted offense on Wednesday afternoon.

The top-seeded Seawolves touched up Black Bear pitching for 18 hits while cruising to a 1 4-6 victory over the No. 4 Black Bears in a first-round game in the America East Baseball Championship at Joe Nathan Field.

“We just kind of wanted to score early and score often, and that’s what we did today,” said Stony Brook junior Travis Jankowski, the America East Player of the Year.

Coach Matt Senk’s squad continued its record-setting season and takes a 44-11 record into Thursday’s 3 p.m. winners’ bracket game against Binghamton (23-24). The Bearcats beat Albany 2-1 in Wednesday’s tourney opener.

The Seawolves aren’t going to get ahead of themselves this time around.

“Last year, we were the first team in Stony Brook history to win 40 games. We kind of had a chip on our shoulder,” Jankowski said. “This year, we’re just trying to stay a little more humble and take it day by day, game by game.”

UMaine (26-27) will try to stave off elimination in Thursday’s 11 a.m. game against Albany (22-31).

Coach Steve Trimper’s Black Bears know they have to stay in the moment as they try to remain alive.

“We’ve got to take this one pitch at a time and work really hard on keeping our minds on that,” said sophomore Fran Whitten, who belted a three-run home run for UMaine. “You never know, a big comeback is always possible in these tournament situations.”

The Bears didn’t have any answers for the Seawolves’ potent offense on Wednesday.

First, a UMaine pitching staff thinned by illness and fatigue was racked around. Junior righthander Steve Perakslis was unable to make his scheduled start after suffering from the flu.

Sophomore Shaun Coughlin, who threw 99 pitches Saturday in a 7-2 loss to the Seawolves, was ineffective on only three days’ rest. He allowed six hits and six earned runs in the first two innings as the hosts built an early cushion.

Junior Jeff Gibbs came on in the third and allowed only one run in his first three innings, but then surrendered four runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh.

The Bears believe they can bounce back and didn’t fold against Stony Brook.

“You’ve just got to wipe it,” said sophomore Troy Black. “You’e got to regroup completely and see what happens from then on. We have to try to take it one game at a time from now on.”

Jankowski and Kevin Krause each collected four singles and an RBI to set the offensive tone for Stony Brook. Maxx Tissenbaum knocked in three runs with two doubles and a single, Kevin Courtney posted two singles and three RBIs and Pat Cantwell added a two-run triple and a run-scoring single.

Senior righthander Tyler Johnson (9-1), the league pitcher of the year, kept the Bears pretty much at bay. He beat UMaine for the second time in five days, keeping the Bears from piling up a lot of hits.

Johnson, Stony Brook’s all-time victories leader, scattered seven hits and finished with two strikeouts and three walks.

“We always felt like we had somewhat of a chance,” said Black, who stroked two singles for the Bears. “We were hitting the ball well the whole game. We were barreling up balls, hard-hit balls to the fence.”

Mike Fransoso singled twice with an RBI for the Bears.

Stony Brook built a quick 6-0 lead. Tissenbaum laced a two-run double down the right-field line in the first inning, then doubled and scored in the second, when Cantwell lined a two-run triple to right-center.

Trailing 7-0, the Bears responded in the fourth. Fransoso singled, Tyler Patzalek walked and Ian Leisenheimer reached on a two-out throwing error to plate a run. Whitten followed, launching a high home run to right field.

“That was the only pitch that I saw inside,” Whitten said. “I think it was a mistake, so I capitalized on it. I was just trying to put the ball in play and make things happen.”

Gibbs answered with two scoreless innings, as did Johnson. The Seawolves then ended the suspense in the sixth.

Krause and Jankowski had RBI singles during the four-run inning, which included two walks and a wild pitch. SBU then scored three more in the seventh.

“It’s important when you put up a few runs to always throw up zeroes after that,” Whitten said.

BEAR TRACKS: Perakslis is expected to get the start Thursday against Albany, which is likely to throw senior lefthander Sean Lucas. The Bears still have Whitten, D.J. Voisine, Jon Balentina and Mike Connolly — who was ill and did not attend Wednesday’s game — in the bullpen … Fransoso gave the Bears a scare in the seventh when he twisted his left knee trying to avoid colliding with sliding teammate Ian Leisenheimer on a fly ball to shallow left. however, he stayed in the game and appeared to be moving OK for the remainder of the contest.

NBC12.com-Richmond, VA News, Weather, Traffic & SportsUpdate: Investigators determine cause of South Side fire

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) –

More than a dozen people are without a home tonight after a nasty fire ripped through a South Side trailer park.

This happened at the Rudd Trailer Park off Jeff Davis Highway in Richmond.

Firefighters are calling this an electrical fire. they say it looks like the family living inside the trailer where this started overloaded a circuit by plugging in several appliances into each other.

Investigators say that's a common mistake during hot summer days like today.

The trailer where this fire started is a total loss. It's hard to recognize anything left inside the charred shell that used to be home for nine people.

Now the Red Cross is taking care of them as well as the seven people that lived in this trailer next door. It too was damaged.

Neighbors say the family that lives here wasn't home when this fire broke out around 8 o'clock Sunday morning. Fortunately firefighters say no one was injured.

Clinton Woody lives right next door to the trailer that caught fire.

“The smoke was coming out the whole trailer,” said Woody.

He says his wife was panicking. She was afraid the fire could spread to their home.

“My wife was crying,” he said.  “The good Lord was there. The good Lord was there. I think a strong wind might have pushed it that way.”

Lt. Robbie Hagaman of the Richmond Fire Department says fires like this become all too common in the summer. He says many people do what's called “daisy chaining”.

“That's just basically plugging one thing into another, into another, into another to get current to more than one appliance,” said Hagaman.  “That's absolutely not allowed. Not only is it not allowed, it's just not safe.”

The trailers in this park are densely packed. many people say they're thankful more homes weren't destroyed.

“I'm glad it's over with,” Woody said.  “I'm glad nothing happen to nobody.”

Firefighters say you should never plug a power strip into another power strip. you should only use one appliance per outlet.

Fire investigators have determined a fire at south side house trailer was electrical in nature, possibly due to an overloaded outlet or circuit.

Just after 8:00 a.m. Sunday, firefighters were called to the 2900 block of Jefferson Davis Highway. Lt. Robert Hagaman with Richmond Fire tells us the trailer was fully engulfed when crews arrived on scene.

The fire took about 20 minutes to get under control. We're told everyone inside managed to escape and no one was injured, but there was some damage to an adjacent trailer.

The Greater Richmond Chapter of the American Red Cross is now assisting 5 adults and 11 children, displaced by the fire. We're told 9 of those people were in the home that caught fire, while 7 others were in the adjacent trailer.

Beginning your with a nutritious well balanced diet is the best thing you do for yourself and your baby. This way, you’ll only need to manufacture a few adjustments during the pregnancy.

If you find it tough to take care of a balanced diet within your first trimester, you can rest assured that your particular not alone. Due to queasiness, some women will eat every single time and gain a lot of weight along the way. other women have problems getting food down and subsequently shed weight.

Preventing malnutrition and dehydration are your most important factors during first trimester.

When you are expecting, you need to eat around 300 calories over usual every day. The best way to travel about doing this is enjoying your body when you find yourself hungry. you should try to eat as many foods as you can from the bottom from the food pyramid.

If you gain excess weight too slow, try eating small food and slightly increase the fat in what you eat. you should always eat when you are hungry, as you are now eating for just two instead of one.

Fiber can help to counteract constipation, which is a common pregnancy problem. you can find fiber in whole grains, fruits, and even vegetables. Fiber supplements such while Metamucil and Citrucel are safe to take during pregnancy.

Unless you happen becoming a strict vegetarian, your protein intake isn’t normally a problem for girls who eat a healthy diet.

A lot of women begins their pregnancy off with a certain amount of iron deficiency. good sources of flat iron include dark leafy green vegetables and meats. Iron supplements should always be avoided, as they can cause internal symptoms such as cramping, constipation, or diarrhea.

Seeing as how you get many the vitamins you need in your diet, you may want to discuss prenatal vitamins with your doctor. Folate is one of the very important, and if you increasingly becoming enough of it, you may be competent to avoid vitamins all together – just ask your doctor to make sure.

Basically, your approach shot is the shot onto the natural. one of the things I love to say is this, “you know your game is improving when you start fixing more ball marks about the green”. To fix a ball mark within the green most likely shows that you hit it in your approach, which is a positive thing.

Here are a few tips to bear in mind, and then we’ll are able to the heart of this post.

Aim for the middle on the green, not the flag. Pin placements and greens increasingly becoming tougher to stick at all times. Don’t be a “sucker” and choose a pin that you’ll more than likely miss, which will leave you within a bunker or some other position to add strokes to your rounded.Focus on alignment, not distance. That leads us into the main perhaps the article.as you know, it’s not an easy task to find out the approach shot, but there are some methods you can drastically improve accuracy of the picture. Alignment is the key to improving your tactic shots. most golfers don’t practice their alignment an excessive amount of on the practice variety, but they should.

Creflo Dollar Arrested, Charged With Punching And Choking His Daughter

Rev. Creflo Dollar has been arrested and charged with punching and choking his 15-year-old daughter.  his daughter called police after the domestic dispute, claiming that the two were fighting over whether or not she could attend a party. The pastor has been charged with simple battery and cruelty toward children, and booked in the Fayette County Jail.

Police claim that the pastor’s daughter called them after he tackled her to the floor, punched her, and hit her with a shoe. Officers say that they saw a scratch to the girl’s neck and throat that confirmed her claims.

The pastor says that his daughter was “very disrespectful” and that he only retaliated when she hit him first.

I am no fan of Creflo Dollar.  his “prosperity gospel” bothers me as much as the private jets and Bentleys being purchased by he and other “men of God.”  Jesus would not be driving a Bentley — at least not on the backs of his own congregation.

But with that being said, I must also admit to this:  as the Father of three daughters, I understand how challenging it can be to deal with difficult teenagers. while none of us can condone needless violence toward anyone, it can be difficult to figure out how to deal with a child who has become violent.

The toughest thing for a Father to deal with when it comes to teenage girls is that they usually think they are more grown up than they actually are.  Their hips get wider, their breasts get fuller, and suddenly, they think they’re ready for the world.  That might be when the child believes it’s OK to start dating the 25-year old, to go out and get drunk with her friends, or to go into venues that seem fun but are ultimately unsafe.

Unfortunately, it’s not until she is the victim of sexual assault or some other unfortunate incident that some young girls realize the importance of a Father’s protection. but sadly enough, after these things have happened, it can be difficult to help your little girl to regain the innocence that has been lost forever.  One of the saddest things about the status of the Black community today is that Fathers are not in the home to protect their daughters, leaving our children open to experience unspeakable horrors that occur in the lives of young people every single day.

If Creflo had to tackle his daughter to keep her in the house that night, then part of me applauds him.  A prominent Father who is willing to risk the humiliation of jail in order to protect his child is the kind of hero that the Black community needs.

In far too many cases, parents work harder at being their their child’s best friend than they do at actually raising the child to be a responsible and intelligent member of society.   Many parents love their children, but don’t care about them enough to do the uncomfortable work necessary to prepare that child for adulthood.  Instead, they think that spoiling their kids and giving them whatever they want is the best way of showing love.

I hope that Creflo’s family problems are resolved, and I hope that he can be given remedies to the problem that don’t involve violence.

But as far as I’m concerned, physical confrontations with a child are not necessarily child abuse.

In a world where Black children are shot every day by one another and by the police, the tough hand of a loving parent might be the only thing that keeps that child out of the morgue.  I encourage others to refrain from judging Pastor Dollar’s parenting techniques until the evidence is fully revealed.  Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if one day, his daughter thanks him for his sacrifice.
