BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher, arranged for the pupils in the Fredonia, Wisconsin Public School, District 6, to observe June 14 (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of the Stars and Stripes) as ‘Flag Birthday’. in numerous magazines and newspaper articles and public addresses over the following years, Cigrand continued to enthusiastically advocate the observance of June 14 as ‘Flag Birthday’, or ‘Flag Day’.
On June 14, 1889, George Balch, a kindergarten teacher in New York City, planned appropriate ceremonies for the children of his school, and his idea of observing Flag Day was later adopted by the State Board of Education of New York. On June 14, 1891, the Betsy Ross House in Philadelphia held a Flag Day celebration, and on June 14 of the following year, the New York Society of the Sons of the Revolution, celebrated Flag Day.

PHILADELPHIA — move over, Betsy Ross. There’s a new generation of flag makers in Philadelphia.
Tucked away in a room at a military supply operation, a dozen seamstresses are responsible for hand-embroidering the U.S. presidential flags.
The dark blue standard, emblazoned with an eagle encircled in stars, denotes the presence of the nation’s leader. It is often seen near the American flag during presidential speeches and other public appearances.
A quiet sewing room at the Defense Logistics Agency is about 10 miles from the house where Betsy Ross is believed to have sewn the first U.S. flag, and is the only place the banners are made.
Thursday is Flag Day, marking the date in 1777 when Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes.
“I think Betsy would be pretty impressed that what she started has evolved into this 200-some years later,” heraldics supervisor Lisa Marie Vivino said.
The supply shop, which also provides the military with equipment, clothing and food, has been producing flags since the 1850s. Production today includes brigade and battalion flags for the armed services, as well as ROTC standards for colleges and high schools — although that job is aided by sewing machines.
Of all the flags, the presidential flag is their “pride and joy,” Vivino said. It takes two people, stitching in tandem, about 45 days to finish each one.
It starts with the flag pattern being carefully traced in white pencil onto blue fabric. Then a pair of workers, on opposite sides of a small table, use more than a dozen colors of thread to enliven the image — its shield, an eagle clutching 13 arrows and an olive branch, a circle of 50 stars. the hand-embroidered flag will look the same on both sides.

Attention paparazzi: be on the lookout for three pending House bills which seek to define and penalize the crime of stalking.
According to the proponents of the bills promoting an Anti-Stalking Act, the current civil and criminal remedies or statutes are insufficient to prevent the crime of stalking.
The House committee of justice, chaired by Iloilo Representative Niel Tupas Jr., is expected to consolidate the three related bills: House Bill no. 5099 authored by Camarines Sur Representative Diosdado Macapagal Arroyo and his mother, Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo; HB 3367 by Sorsogon Representative Salvador Escudero III; and HB 6114 authored by Representatives Irwin Tieng and Mariano Michael Velarde of the Buhay party-list group.
Civil Code roots
Article 26 of the Civil Code of the Philippines, or Republic Act no. 386, provides that “Every person shall respect the dignity, personality, privacy and peace of mind of his neighbors and other persons.”
It states that the following and similar acts, though they may not constitute a criminal offense, shall produce a cause of action for damages, prevention and other relief: Prying into the privacy of another’s residence; meddling with or disturbing the private life or family relations of another; intriguing to cause another to be alienated from his friends; vexing or humiliating another on account of his religious beliefs, lowly station in life, place of birth, physical defect or other personal condition.
Intimidation
Former President Arroyo, who is under hospital arrest on electoral sabotage charges, said the act of stalking or its accompanying behavior was a violation of such constitutional/legal rights since it involves harassing, bothering, frightening and interfering with people’s private lives. It is a form of disguised intimidation, which may be a subtle attempt at harassment.
Under the bill proposed by the Arroyos, the penalties range from imprisonment of six months to six years and/or a fine of not more than P500,000, or both, at the discretion of the court.

Construction on a water pipeline has begun at a mobile home park in Lycoming County despite the fact a handful of residents are still living there.
On Tuesday, state police removed dozens of protesters who came to Riverdale Mobile Home Park near Jersey Shore in support of those tenants.
Those residents were fighting eviction after Riverdale was bought by a company working in the gas industry. now a company spokesperson said an agreement has been reached with those tenants and the company is working to find them new homes.
Those tenants had been fighting eviction since March when Aqua America bought the mobile home park with plans to draw water from the Susquehanna River to use for gas drilling.
Residents were told if they left by June 1, Aqua America would give them $2,500 dollars to help with relocating.
For the seven who stayed behind, they gained support across the country.
On Tuesday state police removed dozen of protesters who had been camped out at Riverdale since the June 1 deadline.

Now a fence surrounds the park’s perimeter and a private security company has been hired by Aqua America .
The residents at the park said they could not talk on camera since their lawyers are still in negotiations with Aqua America.
A spokesperson for Aqua America said while lawyers on both sides are in talks the residents will be allowed to stay at the park.
A statement from Aqua America said “We have come to an amicable resolution with the attorneys representing the occupants of the former Riverdale Mobile Home Park. the details of their relocation are being finalized with their attorneys”.
Aqua America officials said they were happy the protesters left peacefully Wednesday and that the remaining residents have promised not to interfere with the ongoing construction while they are living at the park.
