NYC’s 311 Hotline Handles Wacky Calls

In addition to serious calls, NYC’s 311 hotline operators receive some off-the-wall questions. Operator Sherri Hill, one of 290 operators, says her strangest call came from a man who wanted to report a UFO. Some other crazy questions: “can I claim my dog on income taxes?” and “who won ‘American Idol?’”
The center handles about 50,000 calls daily. The top 3 record 311 call days were Feb 25, 2010 when there was a big snowstorm; Dec. 20, 2005, the date of the NYC transit strike; and August 14, 2003, the date of the Northeast blackout. at an accompanying website, nyc.gov/311, users can file and check the status of complaints immediately.
