Music and gambling have gone hand in hand since the days when the Rat Pack ruled Vegas.
Today some major Northern California casinos feature top working musicians and comedians. Compared to shows at nongaming venues, ticket prices are fair – sometimes even a bit below market value to lure people into the casino.
Here are some of the highlights at Northern California casinos in the coming months:
Cache Creek: This casino in Brooks (Yolo County) features a diverse lineup in its Club 88, ranging from the Philadelphia soul of the O’Jays (April 21. $65-$89) to the party band Smash Mouth (April 28. $35-$55).
On May 13, Chang Di and Choo Mimi headline two Mother’s Day shows ($58-$108). on May 19, Natalie Cole performs her classics ($69-$89).
Among the other upcoming musical highlights at Cache Creek: Filipino Megastars on May 26-27, Kenny Loggins on June 16, Supertramp’s Roger Hodgson on Aug. 11 and George Benson on Aug. 25. For more info, go to www.cachecreek.com.
Thunder Valley: Located in Lincoln (Placer County), this casino has two venues: its indoor Pano Hall showcases well-known acts in an intimate setting, while the amphitheater is where summer headliners play.
Here’s a roundup of who’s coming to Thunder Valley: comedian Louie Anderson (8:30 p.m. Saturday. $32.50-$42.50), Berlin featuring Terri Nunn (April 13. $22.50-$32.50) and funk-soul jazz sax man Maceo Parker (May 12. $27.50-$37.50).
Other highlights include a Rat Pack Tribute on May 13, Sacramento rockers Tesla on May 18, Creedence Clearwater Revisited on June 2, Trace Adkins on June 29 and Steve Miller Band on July 13. For more, go to www.thundervalleyresort.com.
Black Oak Casino: This Tuolumne County casino doesn’t book top headliners but still has fine music – and its shows are free. Coming up: Beatles tribute band Sun Kings at 9 p.m. Friday, the Latin dance ensemble Aztlan at 9 p.m. Saturday and comedian mark Pitta on April 19. For more information, go to www.blackoakcasino.com.
Jackson Rancheria: This Amador County casino lures some top acts to its Grand Oak Ballroom: little Anthony and the Imperials performs April 26 and Robert Cray plays May 4. both shows $40. Information at www.jacksoncasino.com.
River Rock Casino: Located in Geyserville, this casino features free shows with appealing acts such as the Anna Kristina Band at 10 p.m. Friday and the California Cowboys at 10 p.m. Saturday. More at www.riverrockcasino.com.
