“Are you ready for bikini season?” Every spring we seem to be bombarded with that same question, as if we spend our whole summer prancing around in bikinis. well, I’m not a bikini person, but I like a good at-home workout that makes me feel great all year long. No one wants to do the same exercise day after day and it’s not doing your body any good to get in a rut either. Fortunately the library has so many great exercise DVDs to borrow.
I like videos that don’t have a lot of complicated moves. I’ve gotten to the end of many videos and thought, “That was easy.” it was easy, because I stood there half the time trying to figure out what I was supposed to be doing.
Also, if a video requires a lot of space or specialized equipment, I’m not going to recommend it. I wouldn’t recommend it mainly because I just haven’t done it. I don’t have much space and I’m not going to fill my living room with gym equipment.
I look for a rather intense workout. do what you can, is my motto. Maybe I can’t keep up with the stars of these videos, but I can do my best.
Here are a few of my video recommendations, not to get you into a bikini, but maybe to get you feeling great and looking good in any outfit you choose. (Just in case you’re wondering: I’m a library employee, not a fitness or medical expert. These are my opinions. Every tape will tell you to consult your doctor before you begin exercising.)
“Blast away the Pounds: Indoor Walk” This is a great beginner video. If you don’t work out, if you hate to sweat, do this video. It’s simple, it’s easy, and it’s a great starting place. You’ll have more energy and confidence right away. Also, it’s Denise Austin. If you don’t know who Denise is, you should definitely get one of her videos. her enthusiasm is obnoxiously absorbing and quite amusing.
“A.M. Yoga for Your Week” This isn’t an intense workout. This is a great introduction to yoga. you get five different yoga routines each about 20 minutes long. Yoga is a great way to connect with your body. Minor aches and pains melt away as you stretch and challenge your body with these easy to follow sequences.
“Yoga now: 10 minute a.m. energizer; 10-minute p.m. destresser” I’m a fan of this a.M. program. it is ten minutes. It’s a good way to wake your body and mind up. It’s quick, easy, and fun. you don’t need any equipment (maybe a yoga mat.) I think starting with little things (like 10 minutes of yoga in the morning) is the way to open your body up to bigger challenges.
“Women’s Health Total Workout in Ten” This video has four ten minute long segments (and a bonus ab workout that requires one of those giant balls). I thought this one was easy at first, but it’s actually deceptively demanding. I like to do all four together because every ten minutes you completely switch gears. the time really flies by. it doesn’t warm you up or cool you down, so it’s a good one to practice stretching on your own.
“Jillian Michaels: Shred-it with Weights” now were really getting into the fun stuff. Jillian Michaels – I’m a fan. her videos are challenging. This one is a kettlebell workout, but you can use hand weights, too. This has two levels both of which include beginner’s modifications. You’ll push yourself but you’ll also do some interesting moves and feel great (and probably more than a little sore) afterwards.
“6 Week six-pack: Levels 1 & 2” This is another one from Jillian Michaels. Holy smokes, this one’s hard, but your body will thank you for the tough love. although this is a very core-centric workout you’ll feel it all over. Jillian gives you a great full body workout with cardio and strength training in most of her videos. I don’t like to spend a lot of time exercising, so I like videos that give you a little bit of everything.
“Inside out Method: Pure Burn, Super Strength” I’m also a big fan of Bob Harper. he has some of the most difficult workouts I’ve ever done. This one has a great beginner’s strength workout. It’s under 30 minutes and it really is for beginners. then there’s the hour long strength workout. One thing I especially enjoy about Bob Harpers videos is that the people in the video struggle too. It’s very hard, but you can see that it’s hard for people that are probably way more serious about exercise than you.
“Inside out Method: Body Rev, Cardio Conditioning” This is the hardest workout I’ve ever done. I don’t really know what Bob Harper was thinking. For some reason I keep coming back to it. It’s easy to follow and you don’t feel bad just doing what you can. There is also a shorter workout that is much easier on this DVD (the full length workout is an hour).
Hopefully some of these recommendations inspired you to borrow an exercise DVD from the library. If nothing here was of any interest, you should try browsing the catalog yourself. Something is bound to catch your eye. Borrow one, try it, and start reaping the benefits immediately.
