Kelsoe attributed this year’s success as the culmination of many years of preparation and dedication and an all out commitment by a group of core players and their parents who began the quest for supremacy as 6th graders and are now seeing the fruits of their labors.
“We have some girls out there this year that decided to be “all in” in middle school and have stayed together to get where they are now, “ said Kelsoe, “and their parents did too. Those parents bought in to what we were trying to do and got them to practices, traveled with them on road trips and paid for summer camps and summer ball so that their kid could get here. These girls and their parents earned this and I am glad that they got here.”
Kelsoe said that it also took a commitment from the district to stand behind the athletic program and fund its activities and get them on the road for all of the often sometimes long road trips needed to take these girls to the next level.
“I knew they could be good,” said the coach in his office inside the Gene Weaver Gym, “We started out with a group of kids years ago and we had that core unit of five or six stay together until now and that is what it takes. most of the time you are lucky to have two or three stick together, we have something special”
Kelsoe has coached the girls that are champions today since they were in 6th and 7th grade and coached them in summer ball as well and refers again to the good relationship he has had with the parents and their dedication to go the extra mile with trips to tournaments in Dallas and East Texas Baptist as contributing factors. It almost didn’t happen. The U.S. Embassy in El Salvador twice rejected a request for Gisselle to come here with a temporary visa, apparently out of fear she would remain illegally. Officials there knew how gravely ill Yarelis was; this was no ruse, no end run around bureaucratic rules.

Their grandfather, Gertrudis Ramirez, an American citizen whose youngest son just finished Marine boot camp, did not know what to do last fall. a waiter at Montclair’s Bluestone Coffee Company, he described his plight to lawyer and regular customer Neil Mullin. Mullin and his wife and law partner Nancy Erika Smith passed the story to this writer.

Gisselle returned to El Salvador with her and Yarelis’s father, Gertrudis’s son Dagoberto, a permanent resident of the United States. Dagoberto is expected to stay in El Salvador five months to try to arrange for the paper work that someday could permanently reunite the girls here.
“We don’t know if it is possible but we hope it is,’’ said Gertrudis. “Right now, I am happy that a miracle happened and Yarelis is alive. That is what I wanted. Both my granddaughters are alive.’’
“She believes she will see Yarelis again,” Gertrudis said.
Perhaps that’s what Gisselle’s eyes told her little sister in the dark.
