Motherhood on Mother’s Day

I don’t know about you… but motherhood for me has been NOTHING like I expected.

I TOTALLY underestimated the blessing of motherhood.

And overestimated my brilliance.

You see, children are little people. People (little or full-grown) have wills.

Before I entered this mothering gig, I had no idea when I saw a kid tantrum-ing in the grocery store… and it appeared the mom was not controlling the child… that she was actually dying inside.

For all those people who stare at moms who have tantrum-ing children – STOP IT. WE DON’T LIKE IT MORE THAN YOU.

Despite my public humiliation… motherhood has been my greatest role.

Which is kinda weird since it is the role I have been least prepared for.

OH I THOUGHT I WAS PREPARED…

For the 1st grader who gets excited when she spells wine.

To be looked at like I am off my rocker…

I will never, ever, never be prepared.

Look at them.

Those are my hearts over there loitering around that water fountain. one barefoot… because that is Lucy.

Because of them I am Mom… Because of them I am living my dream.

Funny. I didn’t realize my dream included so much LAUNDRY.

Happy Mother’s Day to all my fellow mothers. And of course Happy Mother’s Day to MY mom – there is a special place in heaven for YOU, mom.

I GET IT NOW. Bless. Your. Heart.

And while today we celebrate the women who have labored in birth and/or in heart… my son still insists there should be a Brother’s Day.

Never miss a thing! Get JOTS latest adventures via email or in your blog reader.

Military moms treated to baby shower at Fort Benning's Kelley Hill Recreation Center

seven months pregnant with her second child, military mom Ashley Broughton knows about the challenges of taking care of family while her husband is deployed.

“It worked OK when we were first married,” Broughton said of her husband, Sgt. Jeremy Broughton, who is assigned to the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division. “I could do a lot of things to keep myself busy, like going to school. It’s harder with a child because of separation. I have to be mother and father and run the household.”

Broughton and nearly 200 other expectant moms received a helping hand Friday with a huge baby shower at the Kelley Hill Recreation Center at Fort Benning. Sponsored by Carter’s Inc., Kids In Distressed Situations and Operation Homefront Georgia, the shower treated expectant mothers to lunch and a gift bag filled with clothes, gift certificates and other items.

Broughton, who has a 3-year-old daughter, said the event meant a lot to her family.

“It means a lot to me as a military mom,” said Broughton, from Wetumpka, Ala. “I am away from my family. they try to support me as much as they can but you don’t get all the support you really need.”

Kim Scofi, president of Operation Homefront Georgia, said the organization was excited about its first shower at Fort Benning to celebrate military motherhood.

“We heard there was a lot of expectant moms down here and we want to be part of giving them goodies to take home,” she said.

In addition to the gifts, expectant moms received information on everything from changing diapers to taking care of the mother and family after the baby is born.

“Education is vital,” Scofi said. “We want to make sure these moms-to-be have everything they need as they go forward.”

Scofi said there are strong military women taking care of the home front when their husbands are gone. “We want them to know there are other people out there with their struggles,” she said. “It’s not uncharted territory.”

For Staff Sgt. Colin Wallace, the timing just seems right for her and former soldier husband Kyle to have their first child. The couple had endured constant deployments and separations before she became pregnant two days after their sixth anniversary. her husband is now attending Columbus State University.

“I’m really excited and couldn’t be in a better place,” said Wallace, who is three months pregnant and works in labor and delivery at Martin Army Community Hospital. “I’m really excited to be here at Fort Benning. There is a lot of support that goes on in the military. It’s going to be a challenge. It’s going to be balance.”

The couple is wishing for a son. “We want a little boy but we are happy either way,” she said.

Scott Lazerson’s gift? Celebrities drop his name

DENVER (MarketWatch) — Lindsay Lohan’s mom called to set the record straight about Scott Lazerson.

“He’s no name-dropper,” Dina Lohan told me. “He’s for real.”

Then I got a call from Kathy Wakile from the reality TV show “Real Housewives of New Jersey.”

“He’s become my friend,” she said, “and you can never have enough friends.”

Scott Lazerson is always uplifting Lindsay Lohan with his positivity, her mom says.

Then I got a call from Jens Pulver from “The Ultimate Fighter,” a reality show on Spike TV. Pulver was the first Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight champion. We’re talking cage fighting, which is illegal when roosters do it, but The Pulverizer, a.k.a Lil Evil, was just gushing about Lazerson.

“This guy is awesome,” he said. “It’s hard not to let him grow on you because he is one positive guy. if he ever gets stressed out, I’d like somebody to record it, because hanging out with him, I’ve never seen it. He’s unique. That’s for sure.”

Lazerson is an Orem, Utah-based media strategist, but he calls himself “a connector.” He offers immediate access to the many famous and important people he’s cultivated over the years.

“It’s a huge Rolodex of relationships,” Lazerson said. “The fallout of that could be a “Today” show appearance or Ryan Seacrest talking about you on his radio show.”

Scott Lazerson.

He says his corporate client list includes Mobli.com, a visual media platform backed by Leonardo DiCaprio, and Outfit7, creator of the popular iPhone app Talking Tom.

Lazerson first called me last year, asking if I could introduce him to a CEO I’d written about. He immediately starting dropping names, including Paris Hilton, Larry King and even a young woman I used to work with at the Denver Post. He invited me to hang with him at the Sundance Film Festival. Of course, with my own demanding schedule of media appearances, this simply wasn’t possible. Plus, I thought the guy was a shameless schmoozer.

I often cringe at outbursts of emotional positivity like a vampire exposed to sunlight. but Lazerson managed to overcome this in just one phone conversation.

He told me he was a 41-year-old Mormon convert who lives with his wife of 20 years and five kids in Utah. I’d never heard of him. Yet he made me wonder: do celebrities drop his name the way he drops theirs?

“He does know me, and Lindsay, and my whole family, really,” Lohan told me.
